Ahh.. This is driving me mad..
My greeting.mer contains:

220-mail.domain.co.uk Mercury/32 v4.52 ESMTP server ready.
220-Use of this server for unauthorised relaying of mail is forbidden.
220 Unsolicited Commercial E-mail ("spam") is NOT WELCOME HERE.

Is this format wrong ??
It isn't the format specified in greeting.txt because you have added response codes and the initial line. Here's a relevant section:

"We recommend the following text as a starting point:

--------- cut here --------------
Use of this server for unauthorised relaying of mail is forbidden.
Unsolicited Commercial E-mail ("spam") is NOT WELCOME HERE.
--------- cut here --------------

MercuryS automatically adds the SMTP response codes and continuation
characters correctly."

Try telnetting into your server to see what response you get.

That said, the client may not be able to handle multi-line responses anyway, even if they are formatted correctly.

Fresh install of Mercury32 and I get email from a test system that does voicemail to email.

Yet on my live email server all I get is:

Not sure the system is not sending the mail but the system should be providing a real domain name list AsterxVM.com instead of a simple name.  That said, that should not cause MercuryS any problem at all.  You got some specifics to work with as to your server name and IP address?

A fresh installation of Mercurey32 works well. The email is received and delivered fine.

I copied my live server across to a test PC and tried that (this is not on the Internet just being used to transfer these specific emails)
Emails from a normal client works well.. but not from the test voicemail pc.

The only things I have installed are spamhalter & clamwall.. nothing appears in there logs.

In Mercury I have spam control and transaction filtering.. But I have set connection control to by pass transaction filtering for this clients IP Address.

As for the AsterxVM name... other emails come in fine with names like this !! So I don't think that's the issue.

I know this is vague.. this pc has no direct internet access and is only working for this one purpose..

Any advice ?

THANKS

Check for a transaction filter dropping the connection. (even though it *should* be whitelisted). Maybe remove transflt.mer temporarily.

The transaction log looks like it is the client that stops sending rather than the server closing it.

Tried removing the transaction filter and still fails..:(

Compare the mercury.ini for both systems paying careful attention to the mercS section.

Thanks.

Copied the mercury.ini from a working 'plain' install (known to work) to the failing mercury..

Still won't work.

I'll have to agree it looks more like the client it quitting the connection than the server is stopping it. Try making a Telnet connection from the voicemail server to port 25 on the Mercury server, mimic the commands sent by the voicemail server and see if you can get past the point where the connection so far is being closed down.

Thanks Rolf - I will try that later tonight.
I will also try to get some output from the voicemail pc and see if it has any logs.

It may be the client, but it works fine with a fresh mercury installation !!

Just had a reply to email:

"We do not 'log in' to the smtp server we just

send a relay message. Rather like a udp packet if it gets there great in

not....."

Does this help ?? Is there any more logging I can turn on in Mercury that might show why it is failing ?

Thanks

I decided to try telnet'ing in to the mail server from the voicemail pc..

Using the commands from a successful session (session data taken from voicemail pc to fresh mercury install)

I could telnet in to the mail server and submit the commands succesfully..

So still none the wiser !!

The problem is my GREETING.MER..

If I remove that it works fine.. as soon as the file is back the problem comes back.

Thanks

Nope, perfectly normal assuming this is all ASCII text.  That said, the sending client may have a bug in that it does know know how to handle these lines.
