PM 4.41 hangs on startup

Most of the time it's because there is a huge message someplace.  In your case it sound like one to be downloaded since clearing the CNM files did not fix it.  You could use POP3 filtering to prevent downloading of mail over a certain size and then go up once in awhile using Selective mail download to see what kind of large messages are on the server.

Been using this setup with XP for a couple of years.  It was fine last night.  This morning when I tried to open PM 4.41 it indicated that the mailbox is locked and offers the choses to CONTINUE or EXIT.  I chose CONTINUE and PM hangs trying at Open New Mail Folder and will not go any further.

As I remember there is nothing in the new mail folder that is important, but I would hate to loose mail that have been moved to other folder that may be unread.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Move all of the *.CNM files out of the new mail directory and try again.  It should now open normally.  You can then put the messages back one at a time until you find the problem message.

It's probaby going to be a really large message.  If you are using content control then I'd recommend that you set a limit on the message size so you are not scanning these large files with encoded attachments.

1.    Use  Tools | Spam and content controls | Content control...

2.    Select and edit the control definition

3.    Select the "Message tests" tab.

4.    Enter 8000 in "Check at most this many bytes in each message"

Thanks for your quick response!

I check the PMAIL directory and there are no *.CNM files listed.  I did not see a new mail directory either.  There is a MAIL directory but no files with this extension that I could see.

Might then be a huge download that is hanging the opening.  Let is set and go have some coffee and come back in an hour and see what happens.

Left it for about 35 minutes and it righted itself. I have not rebooted as yet, should I do some sort of maintenance to assure no future problems?

Thanks for the help Thomas!
