-- I know there are these things called "Identities" but I don't understand them
I recall having the same problem and feel that Help and the manual lack a clear description of how they basically work.

When you create a new identity (Tools/Identities) you are asked which identity you want to base it on - it will be <default> if you don't already have any named identities.
At the point the settings for the new identity are identical to those of the one you based it on, however, when you make changes to your settings (e.g. Internet options), they only apply to the current identity. With one identity you could be billbloggs@bullshit.com and another dickehead@happy.org and you can set up your POP & SMTP definitions for each of them.

For my main (default) identity I don't use list banding (Tools/Options/User interface/List displays) but for others I do (with different colours for each) so it's immediately apparent that I'm currently a non-default identity.

Recent incidents...

-- Moved to a house in the boonies

-- Too far for a DSL line

-- Cable, still arguing

So, I'm blazing the internet at 24 Kbps.

Web-Based e-mail is no longer acceptable. Pages (at this speed) take 5 or 10 minutes to load, if they load at all. (Federal law prohibits anyone from creating simple effective webpages as was common in the past.)

So, I'm trying Pegasus.

Interestingly enough, I'm finding this to be far superior to the web-based e-mail thing. I'm really starting to like it; a lot.

Here's my immediate problem. I have given different entities (e.g., the phone company, the electric company, the bank, etc.) over 100 different E-mail addresses. Typically, the E-mail to each one of these addresses is forwarded (generally through a matrix of about 3 or 4 forwarding bounces) to my in-box at one final destination, where I fetch them and read them. This means that I can receive a dozen different messages on any given day, with no two having the same "TO:" address.

That's where I welcome suggestions on how to navigate Pegasus on my computer, and learn where the other secrets are located on this website.

e.g.,

-- I know there are these things called "Identities" but I don't understand them

-- I seem to infer that Pegasus can sort messages and move them to folders, so what does that do for me ?

-- I'd like to be able to fiddle the headers

-- I'd like to be able to respond to the sender with the same "TO:" address (which he used) as the "FROM:" address in my response to him. Can this be done ? (Was that question worded clearly ?)

-- I'd like to learn more about how to implement the "X-Apparently-To:" field in the headers of the mail that I receive.

-- A zillion other questions too numerous to list in an introductory "hi" message

So,,,

Big question: if you have read all this, and you are either a moderator or an established positive contributor to this community, then,,,

Does a clueless slow speed newbee, or these types of questions, belong here ?

I think this post belongs to the PegasusMail->Community Support forum (maybe some moderator can move it).

Did you look at the manual, already ? :-)

I'm trying to answer some of you questions:

I know there are these things called "Identities" but I don't understand them
Identities are the way to deal with multiple mail accounts.

For example: You have a GMail and a Hotmail account, so you can create two identities, one for GMail and one for Hotmail.
I seem to infer that Pegasus can sort messages and move them to folders, so what does that do for me ?
You can set up filters to move messages to folders automatically, e.g. you have one folder for the phone company and want every incoming mail

from this company to go  in the "phone company folder", you could use the filters.

I'd like to be able to respond to the sender with the same "TO:" address (which he used) as the "FROM:" address in my response to him. Can this be done ? (Was that question worded clearly ?)
Use the different identities to reply.

No problem, just keep asking.

Did you say "manual" ?

I'll spend 10 minutes looking for it.

(Hope you understand that I need anywhere from 3-to-10 minutes to load a typical webpage from a typical website.)

I still can't figure out how to set the "FROM:" and "REPLY TO:" fields at this time

I want the "FROM" field to match the "TO" field that the sender used to contact me. If this were auto-magically generated, hooray. That's my immediate goal for the moment.

But hey, thanks for the feedback, and moderators, thanks for putting this message in the proper place.

contact me. If this were auto-magically generated, hooray. That's my

immediate goal for the moment.

1.   Create an identity for each account. Become each identity and setup the Tools | Options and Tools | Internet options for that user. See Tools | Identities | Help for details.

2.   Create a folder for each account and attach the proper identity to that folder via the right click options.

3.   Create a filter based on the To:/Cc: address in each message and move the mail to folders based on the addresses.  You need a filter for each email address used.

Now when the mail is downloaded, the new mail filter finds the email address in the message and moves it to the appropriate folder.  Mail that you forward and/or reply to now will use the email address of the identity attached to the folder.  If you receive Bcc: or list mail where your addresses are not in the To: or Cc: fields then these will end up in the new mail folder.  You'll need to create filters for these messages as well to get them to the proper folder so yuo'll be replying with the proper address.

I think I followed your directions.

How do I look at the message headers to see if the fields are what I intended ?

When reading a mail message you can hit the "Raw view" tab to see all of the message headers and message structure.
