I suggest you look at the font you are using to display the message. As you are trying to display Utf-8 streams, I suggest you select font MS Arial Unicode as your display font (while looking at the message, click the lowercase "f" on the menu bar and select the mentioned font.).   It displays fine for me too.

Whenever I receive a non-English mail with language-specific symbols (e.g. é or è in French, or a vowel with an Umlaut in German...) the text in the mail does not render these symbols, but strange symbols instead (e.g. ä). I have not found if, and how, I can make Pegasus render the exact language-specific signs so that I can read the message well.I don't think it has anything to do with UUcode, ascii or hexadecimal code or anything of that kind (I think). But what is it then. Could anyone help me out here?

Depends a lot on the sender using the correct character set in the message.  If this is a test/plain type message with no character set specified then it's going to be plain ASCII test.  If they specify something like ISO-8859-1 and then use a character like the euro symbol that is not in the set then it's going to just display a box.  This goes on and on, there are a lot of way to mess up when sending something other than plain ASCII text.  What we would really need is a sample of the message that is broken showing the headers and the body.

What you suggest is that there is not a "device" in Pegasus to recognize the received character set and "translate" into sth. legible, and that the receiver is at the mercy of the sender's character set choice (like here: utf-8), is that it? Not at all sure what to tell you.  This messages displays as follows in my system.  I did a copy and paste to notepad and then to a CNM file. All the UTF-8 encoded characters look good to me.
