Now what if I were to change the domain to southlandcrossingtv.com? I

would have to change the nameserver to hostrocket which is hosting the

domain I do believe... and then would the SMTP server stay the same? or

that would change also?

This domain has an IP address and MX records. If this is not your IP address then you really need and MX host with a lower number 9less than 10 anyway) pointing to the host name of the Mercury/32 host.

    southlandcrossingtv.com, MX, 10, mx4.hrnoc.net
    southlandcrossingtv.com, MX, 10, mx1.hrnoc.net
    southlandcrossingtv.com, MX, 10, mx2.hrnoc.net
    southlandcrossingtv.com, MX, 10, mx3.hrnoc.net
    southlandcrossingtv.com, A, 216.120.254.131

I also remember reading something posted by Thomas, regarding the SMTP server setting and connection control?

Clicking all 3 first tabs and creating a password file.

I created the password file and now I get this:

Thanks in advance,

The logs look like mail received normally. The question is does MercuryE (or MercuryC) get this as outbound mail to the GMail account.

Looks like core processed the MG file pair in the queue from MercuryS and created an MO outbound file pair for MercuryE/C. Now what we need to see is the MercuryE/C log to see if the outbound mail was processed. Since it looks like you have a randomly assigned IP address you should be using MercuryC to send via the ISPs SMTP host to prevent the outbound mail from being blocked by blacklists.

Looks like a good server.

Requested action not taken: mailbox name not allowed
553 We do not relay without RFC2554 authentication.

Verify that the username and password used in the password files are the same as being used in the authentication. Mercury supports an Internet standard called Authenticated SMTP: when this feature is enabled, Mercury will advertise to connecting clients that it can accept SMTP authentication. If a client then authenticates correctly, it will be allowed to relay. Pegasus Mail and other widely-used Internet mail clients support authenticated SMTP, and it is an excellent way of allowing your roving users to use your server without opening yourself to relay abuse. Mercury supports three Authentication methods - CRAM-MD5, PLAIN and LOGIN, although LOGIN and PLAIN are very weak and you should avoid clients that use them.

Authenticated SMTP requires that both the client and server have access to a common password. For that reason, you need to provide Mercury with a list of usernames and the passwords that correspond to them - Mercury typically cannot get this information from the operating system for security reasons. Enter the name of the file where Mercury should store the user/password combinations, then click the Edit button to edit it. Each line contains one username/password pair.

Important note: There is nothing that requires you to have a different SMTP Authentication password for every user on your system, nor is there anything that says that your SMTP Authentication username has to match any real user on your system. If you wish, it is perfectly permissible for you to set up a single AUTH username/password pair and provide it to all your users, although clearly this will have some ramifications for security.

If you check the control marked Authenticated SMTP connections may relay mail, then any authenticated connection (one where the user has provided any valid username/password pair defined in your SMTP Authentication file) will be permitted to relay messages even if it would otherwise have been prevented from doing so by either the normal or strict relaying tests (see above).

If you check the control marked Only Authenticated SMTP connections may relay mail, then SMTP authentication becomes mandatory for relaying - a non-authenticated connection will not be permitted to relay mail even if it would otherwise have been permitted to do so by either the normal or strict relaying tests. Because this option supersedes all other tests, selecting it will check and disable the other three controls in the group.

Hey Thomas, Thanks for speedy reply.

Is it neccessary to have the 3 boxes checked off? And I'm using MercuryC because I want it to be just the mail server right?

The Auth Password box I put in the name as "Test" and then clicked edit

And

put in the following of the Windows Vista Users:

Username1 Password

Username2 Password

With a space in between. Let me know what you think.

Here's another one without the 2 boxes checked except the first one is checked.

The thing is it seems to be stuck in outgoing jobs, and then it seems to says it completed. But yet I do not recieve the email.

Let me know how my configuration should be like and if those 3 boxes need to be checked off.

Thanks,

Steve

You turned on authorization and then you need to turn it on in your mail client as well. You are trying to send to an external email address without authorization and that's relaying..

put in the following of the Windows Vista Logon

Username1 Password

Username2 Password

These should be the username and password used for the user in the Mercury/32 user setup. Use CTRL+Configuration+Manage local users to set the passwords for the user. This is so that the same username and password used to download their mail from Mercury/32 can be used for authorization. You can use a different username and password for AUTH when using Pegasus Mail, T-bird, OE or Outlook since you can set this in their setup. This though is required for many other e-mail clients that must use the POP3/IMAP4 username and password.

Hey Thomas,

Is it crucial for me to turn on authorization? And if I did what mail client are you referring to if I just use squirrelmail as the client and web base.

Also, I understand what you mean by the Mercury/32 User Set-up. I thought maybe it was something there I was doing wrong but actually nope Just use the usernames and password related to the Mercury32 user setup.

Sorry for being a noob... this is pretty new to me.

Thanks,

Steve

Yes, you really do need Authentication turned on, or you will become a SPAM source very quickly.

You can add a Connection Control entry in the MercuryS config to exempt the squirrelmail machine (127.0.0.1 ?) from having to authenticate.

Do you have MercuryC setup to send via your ISP SMTP host? It looks like it is delivering to MercuryS as the smarthost, which then sends via MercC to MercS ...... hence the looping?

I setup MercuryC to delare myself as www.southlandcrossingtv.no-ip.org? is that correct? or should that be my ISP SMTP host? which would be "cg.shawcable.net"

And your totally right it is looping and it detects a duplicate and deletes it. So I should try the exempt in order for it to work? or go into Squirrelmail config and enable the auth.?

Yes it is crucial to turn off relaying otherwise you become a spam server. If you need to relay off the server you must use authentication.

For Squirrelmail you can setup a single SMTP AUTH username and password for all authenticated users. In the SM config directory there is a file config_local.php Modify it as follows to provide the required username and password. The user and pass are replaced with the username and password you entered in the ESMTP auth file.

<?php

Since you are only talking to your ISP you can probably declare yourself as anything you like, but this will be taken as evidence and may be used against you by an antispam system further down the delivery chain [:P]

You need to enter the details of your ISP's SMTP server ("cg.shawcable.net") under "Smarthost" (and probably your username & password for sending) just like in your regular mail client.

I suspect you have your own name in the smarthost box which is why your server is looping.
Is it crucial for me to turn on authorization?
Maybe not. There is more than one way of stopping unauthorized access to your mail server, but you must, at least, have the top two checkboxes ticked under Connection control / Relaying control.

After that, you can either allow relaying via authorization (the third checkbox), and/or allow it by IP address in the relaying control. (If you check the fourth box, then you can't relay without authorizing first.)

Authorization is mainly useful when you are remote from your server and need to relay over the internet. For relaying from within you own network, or even from the same machine, the IP address controls are probably simpler to set-up and use. I just have my own network (192.168.0.0) and the local machine (127.0.0.1), and don't use authorization.

The help gives a good description of what all these controls do, but it usually takes practice before getting used to all the options.

Hey Thomas,

I replaced the coding with your coding and I get this:
Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at C:\xampp\htdocs\config\config_local.php:20) in C:\xampp\htdocs\functions\i18n.php on line 433

Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at C:\xampp\htdocs\config\config_local.php:20) in C:\xampp\htdocs\src\login.php on line 115
So I modified it to show this:
<?php
/* Local config overrides.
   You can override the config.php settings here. Don't do it unless you know what you're doing.
   Use standard PHP syntax, see config.php for examples. */
$smtp_sitewide_user = 'user';
$smtp_sitewide_pass = 'password';
Then I updated the MercuryS AUTH password file to reflect the "user" "password" and I still get
Requested action not taken: mailbox name not allowed

Hey Thomas,

I replaced the coding with your coding and I get this:
Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at C:\xampp\htdocs\config\config_local.php:20) in C:\xampp\htdocs\functions\i18n.php on line 433 Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at C:\xampp\htdocs\config\config_local.php:20) in C:\xampp\htdocs\src\login.php on line 115
So I modified it to show this:
<?php /* Local config overrides.    You can override the config.php settings here.  Don't do it unless you know what you're doing.    Use standard PHP syntax, see config.php for examples. */ $smtp_sitewide_user = 'user'; $smtp_sitewide_pass = 'password';
Then I updated the MercuryS AUTH password file to reflect the "user" "password" and I still get
Requested action not taken: mailbox name not allowed 553 We do not relay without RFC2554 authentication. Then I updated the MercuryS AUTH password file to reflect the "user" "password" and I still get

Looks like you are not using the authentication at all. Did you tell SquirrelMail to use the CRAM-MD5 SMTP authentication in config.pl?

Steve

Even if you install perl if will probably not work. Vista is a pain in the rear. ;-( You should be able to edit the config.php directly though and make the changes. I think this is the only think you need to change.
