I am in trouble with re indexing:

Every now and then pegasus tells me there is a problem in my junk mail box and recommends that I re-index it, but reminds me that I may get mails back that were once deleted,  On Sat last I did re- index from such a prompt and have got ...I kid you not.... Over 173,000 mails in my junk folder. Pegasus froze with this amount so I re booted, Now Pegasus will not open, even when I left it to open overnight.

 What can I do? If I re-install Pegasus will I lose my data files? I have tried to use telnet to delete some but telnet will not function either!

 Please help with advice

Once a mail is deleted in Pegasus were does it go? Because putting back over 173 thousand baffles me

that 173K messages  is a lot but if you leave it alone long enough it will open.  You have got to delete and recover the deleted space at least once in awhile to keep this from happening.

It goes no where.  When a message is deleted the index (PMI) is marked deleted but the data file (PMM) retains the message.  When a folder is compressed then all the deleted messages in the PMM file are removed.

Many thanks for your reply , I read a previous post of yours on a similar problem about taking a file out . I did that on the biggest file and now pegasus has opened.

Although it is configured to empty deleted mail folder on closing...it doesn;t and perhaps this could be part of the problem/

I suspect the deleted messages folder is corrupt.  Try manually deleting it before closing and i think you will see it starts working for you.
