Pegasus crash

Problem solved!

Like I said, the pc had crashed twice and I also noticed that a mswinsck.ocx had been changed. So basically I did a system recovery to the day before the crash and, like magic, Pegasus stopped crashing. So it wasn't its fault after all [:D]

Two other operations I found useful to identify the problem are:

-  to move out (and back one by one) the .CMN files

- to remove (and then put back) the HIERARCH.PM file

this allows you to see if it makes a difference or not. If yes, then the solution is much less painful than to have to restore the system!!!

Thanks again, especially to Thomas and  arnaudherve!!

Hello, I really hope you can help me ..... Pegasus is not an option for me!!! I REALLY need it.

Here my problem:

I''m using PM v. 4.41 : it now crashes almost every time when  I

check the mail (check and send operation). At this point it shuts down.

When I reopen it, it tells me that mailbox is locked by

another process, and I have to select Continue. Often, I also get an empty "fake" message in the Queue Manager window, that I am able to delete.

I can however send or receive single messages... almost but not always.

Here is the premise:
Until a few days ago I didn't have any problems, I didn't change any settings in PM, and I didn't change the antivirus or firewall that I've been using with Pegasus for 10 years.

I did install/disinstall several programs in the last days, and had one major system crash while watching a video file (the PC just showed the ugly blue screen with the white codes that are too fast to be read and then turned off; when I turned it back on again everything was apparently ok. All my other programs work ok).

hope to hear from some expert real soon!!!

If this an emergency, first try to access your mail online, through the website of your provider.

Then, download and install another Pegasus in another place on your hard disk.

Then, if you need to check your old mail, open your new Pegasus and refuse to create an account, then close it. Find the folder of your old account in the old Pegasus folders (usually Pmail/Mail ) and copy it in the Mail folder of your new account (Pmail/Mail or Pmail/Mail/Admin).

Reopen your new Pegasus.

Remember, this is not a solution to repair, just to continue while repairing.

Thank you so much for the idea, that I'll certainly keep if it will ever be necessary, however, I am able to check my mail, it's just "dangerous" because I'm constantly afraid to lose something on the way so I really need to solve the problem at the root. The program crashes, and when I open it again (unlocking the mailbox) I see the messages it downloaded.

Any other ideas?

Thanks

Hi see previous image, as for OP I cannot delete these corrupt mails. But if I close the New Mail Folder and repoen they disappear but then start reappearing one every few seconds. I was 4.41 but have upgraded to new beta no difference

I think its corrupt spam says it has an attachment Pmail cannot open

It looks like a virus repeating itself. Close Pegasus and scan all your computer.

Looks to me like your anti-virus software is deleting a new mail message CMN file over and over.  I would use File | Selective mail download to check out what is on the server that is being downloaded over and over.

Hi

Thanks you two, that was it. What's more I didn't realise that my AVG protection had (been) shut down, I'm on rotten Vista where you don't feel you control anything. So reinstalled AVG8.x free. Opened Peggy and a big alarm window jumped up  "You have a virus in xxxxxxx.cnm" do I want to move to the Vault,

You can bet your sweet bippy I did want to!.

So thanks Again

Normally I take a look at these since and least in the raw view to see what they are currently up to.  ;-)
......I also get an empty "fake" message in the Queue Manager window, that I am able to delete.......
Had a similar problem a few days ago- Pegasus v4.41 had a problem and said it couldn't write to a file.

I've lost my frequently used addresses and spelling dictionary AND I also have a message in my queue that can't be deleted or sent.

Everything else appears fine, so I'm not too worried.

Any suggestions?

Is that queued message and empty message?

1.  Use Help | About Pegasus Mail | Info to locate the HOME mail directory.

2.  Use File Manager or Explorer and go to this directory and delete the zero length PMO, PMX and PMW files.

For the others I really would start worring about a hard drive problem since the only way these can be lost if they were deleted.

Deleted those zero length files...no more phantom queued message.....thnx!

No other signs of any issues for last 4 or 5 days, so I'll keep my fingers crossed that it was some sort of strange occurrence to delete my frequently used addresses and spelling dictionary and not an HD issue!!!!!
