SMTP problem with laptop on travels

Hi Thomas,

Many thanks. It now works as I want it to. Your help is much appreciated.

Hi Thomas,

Many thanks. It now works as I want it to. Your help is much appreciated.

Regards, Ron Hulme.

My e-mail ISP is DEMON.

In former times, using dial-up, Pegasus/TOOLS/INTERNET OPTIONS for RECEIVing and SENDing were specified as "pop3.demon.co.uk" and "post.demon.co.uk".

Then came broadband, and my broadband ISP (ntlworld) refused "post.demon.co.uk" for SENDing, and I have to use "smtp.ntlworld.com" instead.

Now I have a laptop, and "pop3.demon.co.uk" and "smtp.ntlworld.com" are accepted when I am in UK.

When I go out of country, however, "pop3.demon.co.uk" is still OK. My problem is that, for SENDing, both "post.demon.co.uk" and "smtp.ntlworld.com" are rejected with the message "15: Peer connect failure (the host has refused the connection)". I am currently in Cyprus, using a wireless broadband network supplied by CYTANET, but I have tried SENDing via "smtp.cyta.com.cy" and still get the same error message.

Can you help me resolve this out-of-country SENDing problem, please? How should I specify SENDing parameters? And should I make a different local specificaton whenever I enter a new country?

I do not want to have to give up DEMON and/or PEGASUS (both of which are excellent facilities) and simply fall back onto HOTMAIL or something similar.

Try: mail-out.cytanet.com.cy in your 'Settings for sending mail (SMTP)'
For this circumstances you can use a GMail-account where you use smtp.gmail.com

Phons,

Many thanks. -- "mail-out.cytanet.com.cy" worked fine here in Cyprus when I changed the setting as you suggested.

I do have a greater problem, though, and that is -- when in another country (for example, I shall be in Argentina next month) how do I find the equivalent SMTP setting for SENDing mail?

Once again, thank you for your speedy response,

Ron Hulme.

Hello Ron,

As I wrote earlier you can get a free GMail-account, make a new SMTP-definition in Pegasus Mail (smtp.gmail.com) and you can overall the world use GMail's SMTP-server for sending your mail.
Take a look how to configure Pegasus Mail:
http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pegasusmail.nl%2Ftip42.php&hl=nl&ie=UTF-8&sl=nl&tl=en
under 'SMTP setting'.

Succes and have a nice trip.

Hi Phons,

Thanks for your suggestion. I will attempt those changes (GMail) in a week's time when I have more free time, and I will let you know the result.

Hi Phons,

I have now made the GMAIL changes that you suggested, and it seems to work OK. (I do not understand the need to enable IMAP, but I have done it anyway.)

Many thanks for your help.

There is one small problem remaining -- The recipient of an e-mail SMTP'd via GMail gets the impression that my DEMON e-id is no longer valid, because my DEMON e-id is overwritten in the "FROM" header by my GMail e-id. Is there any way of avoiding this problem?

Yes, go into the GMail account and add the alternate email address. Settings | Accounts | Send mail as:
