thank you very much for all the help & guidance.

regards,

bun

hi, i'm using mercury and pegasus mail for my mail system@home, just wanna make sure that the setups are correct and if its not right, pls correct me. I've searched, and read posts in this forum, but not sure if my configuration is still the best.

I need to be able to send/receive internal mails (say 3 users (user1,user2,user3), on local domain say zserver ip 192.168.8.188) and nonlocal mail. These are the setups:

- the zserver is running mercury 4.6, and 3 other pc running pmail each w/ its own installation (not sharing the pmail thru' network).

- on the localdomain setup and real internet name, 3 lines are => (zserver:[192.168.8.188], zserver:zserver, zserver:mydomain.dyndns.org)

- smtp server is ON (to send between local and nonlocal mail)

- pop3 client is ON(collect mail from nonlocal mail, and distribute using filter to user mailbox)

- pop3 server is ON(for local user to collect mail)

- smtp client relay ON (to send nonlocal mail OUT, the smtp for nonlocal mail needs AUTH and the From field must be, say 'whoever@domainxyz.com' or it will reject the out mail saying that 'PHISING detected...rejecting blablabla'. pls note that domainxyz.com is real domain w/ real internet IP address)

On 3 other pc, internet options.. are:

- real internet address: whoever@domainxyz.com (i cant put local_me@zserver or i wont be able to sent out nonlocal mail)

- pop3 user1@zserver:passsword

- smtp zserver

All working fine right now.

but my questions are:

1. since the real internet address (on 3 other pcs) must be whoever@domainxyz.com, i can send local and nonlocal mails fine, BUT for local mail, the "from" will become whoever@domainxyz.com not user1@zserver, is my settings wrong??? bcoz smtp server on zserver will say 'mail from 'whoever@domainxyz.com' (nonlocal) to user2@zserver (local)' if i tried to send local mail only.

2. how do i save all received and sent messages in the zserver (local and nonlocal mail) ?

thank you very much for your kind attentions.

regards

happy pmail user

Go to File | Network configuration | General and turn on "Create Internet session logs (advanced diagnostic use only)"

Checking this control tells Pegasus Mail to create special log files that show the entire exchange of information between it and the servers it connects to. Each session will be created in a file called TCPxxxx.WPM in your home mailbox directory (the "xxxx" is replaced by four digits). Creating session logs will slow down the performance of your system somewhat, and you should be aware that any username and password information exchanged between Pegasus Mail and the server will be shown in the log, *even* if you use SSL to secure the connection. Session logs are primarily useful if you need to debug a problem between Pegasus Mail and one of the servers it connects to - you should enable the option only on instructions from a system administrator or from Pegasus Mail technical support. [ Technical note: this control has the same effect as using a "-Z 32" commandline switch when you run Pegasus Mail ]

You can now try again to send the mail and then look at the resulting TCP/IP debug file. Review of this file will tell you exactly what is going on between WinPMail and the server. What you are looking for is the From: address in the message as sent to the server. If you are sending using a valid From: address and it is different on the other end then apparently the server is changing the From: address. Normally though the ISP will allow multiple from: addresses if you register them with the server. If the From: address is being changed you need to talk to the ISP to find out how to register the addresses.

FWIW, if you get a GMail account and use their server for sending they will allow you to set alternate e-mail addresses.

Use an always filter and send the mail to a user called something like ARCHIVE.

oh ya, btw if on the real internet addres on the 3 pcs is set to user1@zserver, sending local mail, works ok, but doesn't work if i tried sending nonlocal mail. since the From is user1@zserver not whoever@domainxyz.com. anyway i can change this automatically from mercury ??? i did try setting in mercury as whoever@domainxyz.com, but when connecting to smtp.domainxyz.com it still sending the 'From' as user1@zserver.

any ideas??

- on the localdomain setup and real internet name, 3 lines are =>

(zserver:[192.168.8.188], zserver:zserver, zserver:mydomain.dyndns.org)

Set the name of the system to mydomain.dyndns.org so that the postmaster and maiser account are valid. This will also make the users address that they enter user@mydomain.dyndns.org.

BTW, providing real data makes it a whole lot easier than trying to guess what you are talking about.

thanks. just replace whoever@domainxyz.com to account1@belahdua.com. the smtp @ belahdua only allows sending email if the from field is its domain belahdua.com.

Looks like you want to send using some other domain and they probably do not allow this. Get a GMail account, set it up to do POP3/IMAP4 and then use this server to send the mail. You need to use account1@belahdua.com as an alternate email address in GMail but this works quite well.

thank you very much for the google info it works, but i am limited to certain amount of email to send out.

current setting is like this:

1. if I set pmail @internet options->real internet address user1@zserver, then sending local mail works but NOT nonlocal mail due to the domain chk.

2. if i set in pmail @internet options->real internet address account1@belahdua.com, then sending nonlocal mail works, local mail also works, but the 'from' becomes account1@belahdua.com, and when replying it become To: account1@belahdua.com, not from the local user who send the mail.

how do i set to get the best of both world?if there is any....option to do that.

thank you very much.

Correct, but the limit is pretty large.

There is none since the ISP is changing the From: address. The only way this would works is to get a fixed IP address and use MercuryE to send the mail. I really do not understand the address user1@zserver since if you use this in the From: and/or the Reply To: address you would never want that to be sent off server.

Ahhh....i think there's a misunderstanding.....

I apologize for my bad english. I will try to explain my best.

assume user1@zserver (from workstation1, using pmail, its smtp setting points to zserver that is running mercury using smtp relay client that will relay outside mail to belahdua.com)

for 1. if I set pmail @internet options->real internet address=user1@zserver, then sending LOCAL MAIL works fine(the recipient can reply, the reply address is correct user1@zserver). Sending nonlocal mail DOESNT work due to the domain chk by belahdua.com, since the From is 'user1@zserver' (belahdua.com checks this From header)

for 2. if i set in pmail @internet options->real internet address=account1@belahdua.com, sending NONLOCAL MAIL works(since the 'From' is correct, and also for people outside to reply, it is correct as account1@belahdua.com, sending local mail also works ok(since mercury treat it as nonlocal mail trying to send to localmail), but for local mail to reply it will show account1@belahdua.com. it should show user1@zserver. i can't put to 'replyTo: user1@zserver', if so, for those nonlocal mail, people will reply to user1@zserver which is incorrect.

my question is....is my settings incorrect or there's a way to make mercury change any user@zserver automatically to account1@belahdua.com for any nonlocal mail. or should i change my settings.....if any....thanks in advance.

bun

You should set your client to account1@belahdua.com

On the Mercury Config -> Aliases you should set the alias account1@belahdua.com to map to real user user1

(you don't need the @zserver on the end)

What is "zserver" The name of the Mercury/32 server in Configuration | Mercury core "Internet name for this system" If so this is incorrect since this needs to be a SMTP or literal domain (i.e. [<external IP address>]) so that the proper domain is added to the mail sent from the system. If you are the only server supporting users within the domain belahdua.com then this should be the name of the system. In any case when send from Pegasus Mail using the Mercury queue on a Windows system the From: address is generated by the MERCURY UDG that you manage using pconfig.exe. You create the UDG when you use Configuration | Pegasus Mail and point at the Pegasus Mail program directory and hit "Update configuration".

   Gateway name : MERCURY
           *New mail path :
   Is ? a program to run? : N
    *New mail search mask :
      *Outgoing mail path : \\thomas\maxtor\MERCURY\QUEUE
   *Run for outgoing mail :
         *Filename format : ~d~d.101
  Run to validate address :
    *Reply address format : ["~p" <~L~L~n@tstephenson.com> ]
  Accepts SMTP addresses? : Y
Simple message headers? : 'Glue' headers
    UUEncode attachments? : Y
          Burst messages? : N Gateway processes BCC? : N
      Strip gateway name? : Y
Force all mail through? : Y

Format Pegasus Mail should use to compose the 'From' field for the message. ~8 or ~n indicate where the name should be placed. The ~L~L tells Mercury to look for a synonym for this user and use that for the From: address if one is found. The ~p is the users personal name, you should use ~o if there are high bit characters in the name. If you replace this field with "~p"<~r> then the users Reply To: address will be used to generate the From: address. That's what I use so that each identity can have their own from: address.

On the Mercury Config -> Aliases you should set the alias account1@belahdua.com to map to real user user1

Merry Christmas and happy new year.

What is "zserver"

zserver is the host name of my server ip 192.168.8.188 (conected to internet thru' router to adsl modem)

The name of the Mercury/32 server in

Configuration | Mercury core "Internet name for this system"

is currently "zserver" not "belahdua.com" (belahdua.com has different IP (but external IP, not my server, its my ISP), but i only have 1 email account that is account1@belahdua.com to be shared among users @ zserver)

mercury core config --> local domains now is:
zserver:zserver
zserver:[192.168.8.188]

pmail is installed on all users' pc right now.

so in short its like this:

account1@belahdua.com is the only external email account i have, and it will be used to send and receive email, but since i have more than 1 user @ home, i want this belahdua.com account to be shared among users, so say i have "tom", "jack", and "mary" on local user, all will be using same external email which is account1@belahdua.com. any mail received will be distributed by mercury using filter message to each user accordingly and an account that "catches" all in and out email, including local mails. hope that clears the air...??

i do not really understand the UDG and pconfig.exe stuff.... is it needed ???.

thank you very much for your kind attention.

Yes no and maybe. If you are using Pegasus Mail for all the users then they can send local mail using the addresses tom, jack and mary as the e-mail address and do not need the @zserver at all. When they send to the internet though then they do need a real email address in their From: address if for no other reason for the reply.

You do not have to use the UDG at all, but it must be removed if you want to send via SMTP. In this case you might just bypass Mercury and send via the external mailer directly to the ISP's server using the address account1@belahdua.com.

The real problem though is you have multiple users but only a single e-mail address and no domain.

Personally I'd go to http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndns/ and get a free domain and then use that domain with Mercury/32. This way each user will have their own valid e-mail address and you can replace the zserver with a real domain for the server.

As an alternative you can get all the users a free GMail account and then use that e-mail address and send via the GMail server using Mercury/32.

now, i remember few years back in a company i worked for, they use mdaemon ver 7.xx, there's a special menu 'header translation' there, it says something like this 'use this to change header FROM for any local mail that is going to send out to nonlocal mail', that worked pretty well.

i can find it in mercury, but there's no condition to set that the FROM must be changed to 'account1@belahdua.com' only if its sending out to external mail.

the current one will change say 'tom@zserver' occurences to account1@belahdua.com regardless its local or nonlocal mail, so i cant use it.

It you are sending via the built-in mailer via SMTP yes, if you are sending via the Mercury/32 queue and using Pegasus Mail in the multi-user mode then no. What happens when you hit the F2 key when sending mail? If you search for * then you should get a listing of all the local users. Using that username in the address field will allow you to send mail locally. Are you setup as multi-user will all users using the same copy of Pegasus Mail? Here is the basic setup for multiuser on a lan.

1. Install WinPmail in the multiuser mode on the "server". Use c:\pmail
for the program; c:\pmail\mail for the mail directories.

2. Run PCONFIG.exe from the WinPMail program directory and change the HOME and
NEW mail directory specification to the \\server\vol\pmail\mail\~8
    format.

3. Go to the remote workstations and install a shortcut to the common
    program.

Ok, now you have the basic mail system setup. You can send mail to each other using Pegasus Mail using the username as an e-mail address.

4. Install Mercury/32 on this same server pointing to the Pegasus Mail
directory structure. Use MercuryD, MercuryS, MercuryC at least. Use
\\server\vol\mercury\queue for the mail spool directory.

5. Point MercuryD at all of your POP3 mailboxes to download the mail to
    your Pegasus Mail user directories.

You now can send and receive Internet mail via Pegasus Mail. The mail is delivered to the Pegasus Mail directories automatically. You send mail simply but putting the output files into the Mercury/32 mail spool directory. This is accomplished automatically with a Pegasus Mail User Defined Gateway that is managed via pconfig.exe.

6. If you want to maintain other POP3/IMAP4 clients, point the client at
the at your Mercury/32 host as a POP3 and SMTP host using the Pegasus
Mail username and password to pickup the mail.

You can do a complete inbound and outbound mail archive with this setup using a simple Mercury/32 "Always" filter that put a copy in a users mail directory.

There is none in Mercury/32. If though you user the built-in mailer and override the LAN mailer you can set the e-mail from: address to anything you want in Tools | Internet options | General.

If you have setup Pegasus Mail in the multi-user mode then yes you can when using Mercury/32. You send to the local users with the simple username and to the external users via the built-in mailer. There are a number of other thing you can do as well using the Mercury queue and synonyms but you will always run into some problem if there is a simple username in any field when sending mail to the outside world.

Why not? Since you only have one e-mail address you can use the personal name setting to create a filtering string to get the replies sent tom the connect user. Mail addresses as "Tom Lastname"<account1@belahdua.com> can be easily filtered to the local account tom@zserver by Mercury/32.

> Yes no and maybe. If you are using Pegasus Mail for all the users > then they can send local mail using the addresses tom, jack and mary > as the e-mail address and do not need the @zserver at all. When > they send to the internet though then they do need a real email > address in their From: address if for no other reason for the reply. > > > > I dont think so, i've tested emaling using pegasus mail to say tom, > pegasus mail says invalid address (seems like its expecting '@'). Use c:\pmail for the program; c:\pmail\mail for the mail directories. 2. Run PCONFIG.exe from the WinPMail program directory and change the HOME and NEW mail directory specification to the \\server\vol\pmail\mail\~8 format. 3. Go to the remote workstations and install a shortcut to the common program. so am i right to say, if i create a multiuser mode installation (user running from \\server\pmail\program\winpm.exe), pconfig stuff, install mercury +MercuryS,+MercuryC,+MercuryD, create users from mercury, create synonnym as follows:

account1@belahdua.com==tom
account1@belahdua.com==jack
account1@belahdua.com==mary

compile it, copy to mercury synonym directory, and on win pmail as well, create filter for mercuryd as to distribute mails to local users. it should be able to do what i want in the first place?

but i need advice on your reply. what are the "some problem" that might arise ?

well, i tested. it works flawlessly. but i have another problem...

for users that is not administrator, they should not be able to change user detail when logging in to pmail or to read their mail also. any password protection???

i read somewhere that pmail is being considered to use encrypted messages, so that password can be enforced, any idea when???
