New filing tray on same sevel in heirarcy as My mailbox

  1. On the server I gave domain and local users list and

create rights. (Once the mail has been dropped in the Archive I don't

want anyone but the administrator to be able to view emails.)

Did I do something wrong?

Since the users do not have read access to the public folder they also can't read the pmfolder.id file to read the foldername. The fallback is to display the directory name. You might try giving all the users read access to this file and see if this fixes the problem.

I have many message folders that I would like to archive so that they are accessible but not part of the main folder tree. How can I create a new filing tray on the same level in the folder heirarcy as My mailbox that can contain these folders?

Here is a method of archiving files to the directory "Archive" on the local

hard drive. This same procedure will work for any read/write drive.

1. Open the folder listing. Go to the menu "Folders" next to "Tools".

2. Use "Add mailbox to list", enter C:\Archive as the path, Archive as

the name.

3. Add a folder to the mailbox called "Archive", the name is not

important. You can also just use the New mail folder on the disk but

this storage is not as efficient since each message is stored

separately.

4. Move the messages to this folder on the disk drive.

There are some operational limitations here:

A. Of course the size of this mailbox is limited by the size of

the disk.

B. Don't just drag an existing folder (or tray) from "My Mailbox"

to the floppy drive mailbox or from the floppy to the "My

Mailbox". It *appears* to work, but actually doesn't. The

folder won't be moved to the floppy. This limitation is being

worked.

Thanks. I did that. And I moved messages not folders, as you suggested. But it didn't accomplish what I was hoping for.

All together I have 300 folders. When Pegasus starts up it takes quite a while for the mail filtering rules are applied before the app is ready. I was hoping that the

time would be significantly reduced once I moved the contents of roughly

50% of the folders into another mailbox. But that isn't the result.

The problem persists. Every time I check for new mail or even click on the new mail mailbox Pmail takes a very long time before the app is usable.

What kind of delay are we talking about? I've got 250 folders plus 6 IMAP4 and 7 added mailboxes and my opening time is much less than 30 seconds. Also, how many messages are you storing in the new mail folder?

With Pmail already running: 60 sec from time I click on New mail to the time I can see contents. In the interim there is message in status bar "Applying mail filtering rules"

Upon startup of the app: 65 sec

(There are 60 entries in New mail filtering rules)

How many messages are you storing in the new mail folder

Mine was <30 seconds from startup so something strange is happening.

I'm grasping at straws here.

How many mail filter?

Any of them checking the body of the message?

What happens when the mail folder is empty?

How large are these messages?

Are you using content control?

One important fact I haven't included because it wasn't relevant to my original post:

I'm using ver 4.50PB1

Your questions:

How many mail filter?

One set of 60 rules when the New mail mail folder is opened

Any of them checking the body of the message?

No.

What happens when the mail folder is empty?

The app. works perfectly

How large are these messages?

3 of the 24 total over 8mb

Are you using content control?

No

One important fact I haven't included because it wasn't relevant to my original post:

I'm using ver 4.50PB1

Your questions:

How many mail filter?

One set of 60 rules when the New mail mail folder is opened

Any of them checking the body of the message?

No.

What happens when the mail folder is empty?

The app. works perfectly

How large are these messages?

3 of the 24 total over 8mb

Are you using content control?

No

That's not very many unless they are a lot more complicated than mine. Still a looping filter can cause this sort of problem. And CC and body filters can get twisted around the axle when it starts scanning the body of the encoded attachments..

Any of them checking the body of the message?

No.

Ok, then it's just working the headers.

What happens when the mail folder is empty?

The app. works perfectly
Sounds like it's hanging on something then.

Have you tried just moving these large ones out of the NMF to see what happens?

Apparently the several files in New Mail that had multi-megabite-sized attachments were causing the long filter processing time. Is that the expected behavior of Pmail (especially the beta)?

Not that I have noticed (and I get these large messages all the time) unless the filters are checking something in the message other than the headers only. If you are looking for expressions and things like that in the body of the message this can easily happen. It will also happen in CC as well is there is no limit set on the bytes to scan in the message.

Even after moving all messages out of the New mail box the app. takes a noticable amount of time to "do its thing" whereas I expect it to be ready instantly.

2/3 of the filter rules check header info., the remaining 1/3 check for expresssions in the body. I've been using those rules for years with Pmail versions prior to 4.50 PB1 and never encountered this behavior. I still wonder whether there's something is the beta causing what I'm seeing.

Should I repost this in the beta forum to get the developer's attention?

I doubt if this is a PB1 problem at all, I suspect if you reverted to v4.41 it would show the same delay. I doubt also if this is a specific WinPMail problem but it can quite easily be either a problem with the filters or a problem with the disk access. My folders are on a WinXP "server" and at some times the windows networking goes flaky with delays and only a reboot of both the server and workstation will restore the normal operation. I never have this problem with the Novell server.

Will this also work on a network drive? I'd like to create one archive folder and have multiple people be able to move email into this folder. I just found the Public Folders Tree. Would this work better?

Yes, I've used both a Netware and Windows server drive for this. I used both the drive mapping and UNC format for the path to the added mailbox as well. Personally though if multiple people are going to be working this mail folder I would use a "Public" folder for this.[/quote]

Strange, the name of the folder is in the file pmfolder.id in the public folder directory. Are you sure all the users have sufficient rights to the mail directories?

Maybe I did something wrong. But, everything is working as I want it to except for the extension showing. This is what I did:

  1. Created a sub-directory named Archive under the C:\PMAIL\MAIL directory on the server.
  2. Went to PMail\Tools\Public Folders and added a tree pointing the the Archive directory on the server.
  3. Added a system wide folder to the Archive Tree named 2009.
  4. On the server I gave domain and local users list and create rights. (Once the mail has been dropped in the Archive I don't want anyone but the administrator to be able to view emails.)
