Hi Ellie/Thomas (David?)

I'm a member of a number of Yahoo groups and have the same problem. I'm aware of what the RFCs say about this but, as a software developer myself who has had to write software to implement certain RFCs, I'm also aware of Postel's Law (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robustness_principle). This says that an application authors should:

Be conservative in what you do; be liberal in what you accept from others.

In other words, when you're sending a message in SMTP format you should strictly adhere to the rules that are stated in the RFC (this is where many, many modern email clients and web based apps break the rules) however, when you're receiving a message supposedly in SMTP format, you should accept that the rules may be broken and try to cope with them. It is this latter part where Pegasus falls down and, despite having been a user of Pegasus for 15 years or so (including making a couple of, albeit relatively small, contributions to its development), it is this part that (along with a couple of others) is causing me to seriously assess whether I should change to use a different email client. In fact I have been assessing Thunderbird recently as it now seems to have all the features I generally use in Pegasus, as well as an extension to password protect Profiles (albeit a relatively simple one, but that is adequate for my needs).

The other issue that is causing me grief is the handling of hyperlinks when messages are read as plain text and configured to have long lines reformatted. The reformatting breaks the hyperklinks. Thunderbird doesn't seem to have this problem, and nor does Outlook, but whenever an email message contains hyperlinks longer than the width of my message reader window I have to toggle the "Reformat long lines" option in order for the whole hyperlink to be recognised as a hyperlink. Even then, it doesn't always work; I have received numerous emails where a hyperlink is recognised and highlighted (up until the end of the reformatted line) in Pegasus but, when I toggle the "Reformat long lines" option, the hyperlink is no longer highlighted and clickabe.

Anyway, the second issue is off topic here (I'll search for it elsewhere) but the first issue is a nuisance that could be avoided if Postel's Law was followed in Pegasus.

Thanks for your time.

John

Hello everyone,

This is not a new problem, but I am wondering if perhaps it has been fixed in some way in the new beta version (I have not yet installed it).

I received a mail from a yahoo forum and found the content is shortened, so only part of the message displays. The name of the sender, at the bottom of the mail appears just fine, but the content is partly missing above it. On this mail it is easy to see as a word is unfinished and I can check the content that appeared on the online forum to see the full mail that was sent.

Message was sent:

X-MSMail-Priority: Normal

X-Mailer: Microsoft Windows Mail 6.0.6001.18000

X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.0.6001.18049

MIME-Version: 1.0

What causes this and is there any way of preventing it? I have had this problem appear on and off for years, long before Windows Mail appeared on the scene. I remember reading about it in the past, but am now hoping the new version of Pmail is better able to cope with whatever it is that is stumping it.

They are sending paragraphs as one long line and greater than 1000 characters.  The SMTP RFC says the lines MUST be less than 998+CR+LF and SHOULD be less than 78 characters.   PB1 may help a bit here or you can even try opening the message in a web browser.

Hello Thomas,

I don't know what PB1 is, I'm afraid. Opening the message in a web browser does not show the content either, as it is simply not there.

How do you ensure that all your correspondents use the correct formatting? Strange, as no one else has reported a problem with losing part of the email.

Thanks again,

Ellie

Hello Thomas,

PB1 is the latest version of WinPMail.  If the content is gone it might have been truncated by one of the servers.  What happens when you look at the raw view? hit the "view" button?

How do you ensure that all your correspondents use the correct formatting?

Tell them that their message is being truncated by some mailers and to ensure that they use short paragraphs in their posts.  It's easier for all to read as well.

Strange, as no one else has reported a problem with losing part of the email.

A number of reasons for this.

1.  They are using a mail client that that uses a web browser to display the mail like Outlook and T-Bird.

2.  They are reading the mail with an on-line mailer like GMail and Yahoo via a web browser. (Very common with the younger set, all my 30 something kids and their friends use GMail for their personal mail)

3.  They simply did not read the message and did not bother to tell the sender that they could not read it.  (very common)

Thanks again,

Ellie

The message is truncated in raw view too. I guess I could try the beta version. I hadn't got the impression that there was enough reason to install this version.

I have written to them to make those suggestions. Unfortunately it is not possible to do this to everyone who sends messages in this format, but it works for this one.

Cheers!
