Is this normal?

It would be the sender that gets the error message, actually.

I keep getting a few IPs that make a connection and then close without sending anything.  They'll do it 10 times in a few minutes.  Is this spam trying to connect and not getting through or could this be legitimate mail be rejected?  It is happening every day not just occasionally.

Is SSL/TLS support enabled in MercuryS? It wouldn't make much sense to establish a secure connection to send spam so it's more likely to be some protocol problem.

Yes, I do have the SSL box checked in MercuryS.  After reading the help file it sounds like the "Enable transaction-level expression filtering".  I didn't do anything except check this box.  I haven't made changes to the "TRANSFLT.MER" file.  Could this be my problem?

The sample rules for transaction filtering are presumably not to blame, but you can disable it if you don't plan to add any rules of your own.

The best way to find out what is happening is if you could catch a connection attempt in a session log. If these connections always comes from the same IP you can use Mercury SMTP Configuration / Connection control and check "Autoenable session logging for connections from this address range".

I can do that.  I already caught one and the error code is:

20: Error -3 creating CryptLib session

OK, that means there is some incompatibility between the connecting client and the cryptography library used by Mercury. Unfortunately there is usually little that can be done about this from Mercury's end, the session is handled internally in CryptLib. If it's a known problem it might be solved in a later update, though.

Could this be causing me to not receive certain emails?  I would think I'd get an error message if that happend.
