Deleting Mail in Mercury

Is there a way to make the mercury imap server expunge itself say every hour? On another event?

Thanks.

I have just installed Mercury on Windows Home Server and and newbie to the program.  I have enabled IMAP so that the mail is collected from the various user ISP mailboxes and delivered to the various Mercury mailboxes on the server.  I use Outlook as my local mail program.  My question is how do I delete mail posts?  Currently when I delete a post it is "crossed out" in outlook but it is not moved to a deleted items folder or deleted permently off the Mercury server.  For those familiar with Microsoft Exchange it is that behavior that I am trying to emulate.  I perused the forum and the documentation but I could not find any mention.  Did I miss something?  If so please direct me to the appropriate reference.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Regards,

Peter

I'm not sure how this is handled in Outlook, but in Eudora there is a choice for IMAP connections to just mark messages as deleted or to move them to another mailbox (Trash presumably). Mercury will act according to the IMAP commands sent to it from the client.

Rolf,

Thanks for your response.  I will look for the necessary configuration changes in Outlook.

If anybody happens to know the answer, please pass it along.

Thanks again,

Peter

You can use the  Edit | Purge deleted messages to remove them immediately or just close the IMAP4 connection to delete.  If you do not want to delete them but move them to a deleted messages folder either locally on on the server create the folder and drag the mail to that folder rather then deleting.  I am using Outlook 2002 and so the options in the newer versions may be different.

Thomas,

I am also using Outlook 2000 on one of my machines and I created a folder  called "Deleted Items" on the server and I moved the posted items I wanted to delete to the folder and the items show up in the Deleted Item Folder as expected, however, the posts are not removed from the originating folder but rather they are crossed out.

Any ideas on why this is happening?  Is there some configuration I am missing on Outlook?

Thanks,

Peter

P.S.  Similar results happen on newer of Outlook as well.

The deleted from the server (EXPUNGE) only happens on closing or when you force the purge.  If there is a setting to do an immediate purge on delete/move in Outlook I do not know it.  Since I only use it for testing I've not really looked all that hard either.  ;-)
