MercuryD and Hotmail / pop3.live.com error
This has been passed to David but the fix will not get into v4.72 since it's in the final release cycle.
Gismo22, please read Thomas's answer above - the fix is NOT in the latest release. There wasn't enough time. I'm hoping for the NEXT release of Mercury. Thanks.

Hi, first post here, thanks for looking.

Windows Live / Hotmail now offers pop3 access to all users:

POP server: pop3.live.com (Port 995)
POP SSL required? Yes
User name: Your Windows Live ID, for example yourname@hotmail.com
Password: The password you usually use to sign in to Hotmail or Windows Live
SMTP server: smtp.live.com (Port 25 or 587)
Authentication required? Yes (this matches your POP username and password)
TLS/SSL required? Yes

I've attempted to configure mercuryD module to collect the mail but I get errors. I'm "using SSL encryption using direct connection" on port 995 but I get the following:

Mercury/32 Transport System, Distributing POP3 Client v4.62,
Copyright (c) 1993-2008, David Harris, All Rights Reserved.

21:16:51 - Connecting to pop3.live.com:995 as 'xxxxxx@hotmail.com'
Р - Network error; delivering anyway.

The log shows:

21:16:51.593: --- Wed Mar 18 21:16:51 2009 ---
21:16:51.593: Connect to 'pop3.live.com', timeout 30.
21:16:53.390: 22: Error -32 activating SSL session (locus 6014, type 4, code 0, 'Server provided a broken/invalid certifi')
21:16:53.390: --- Connection closed normally at Wed Mar 18 21:16:53 2009. ---
21:16:53.390:

This procedure works if I configure Forte Agent to collect the mail directly rather than via Mercury.

Googling is showing other folk struggling with this with mercuryD too - anyone here know a fix or is Microsoft broken?

Thank you

John

Thank you Peter, at least I got an answer that it's being tested, I wasn't to know that until now - unless I missed the announcement somewhere?

Appreciate it.  [:)]

Hello again,

Just installed release candidate 4.71 and still getting the same error. Maybe I'm doing something wrong or there is confusion regarding the error?

Anyone can help me please?

Regards,

John

Thanks for the reply Peter!

I've never used the self signed certs facility before, but I've read the help files and generated a cert but I don't know how it relates to MercuryD unfortunately.

The error is still present even with a cert generated.

Maybe "Hotmail pop3 retreival with MercuryD" just can't be done with Mercury at this time? If someone could maybe just confirm this it would save me losing my hair!  [:)]

Anyway, I'll keep watching the forum in case a solution is posted.

Thanks again

John.

So, can't anyone give me a difinitive "Yes" or "No" on this? I understand that Mercury development is now all but dead so if the answer is no I need to implement another way of doing it.

Please read the original post if you need any clarification of what I'm trying to do. Thank you very much.

Nope, no definitive yes or no.  MercuryD does work with most SSL setups like GMail and other SSL servers.  If it does not work with Hotmail I suspect is not properly accepting the SSL connection.  Microsoft is not really known for meeting the requirements of the RFC's so this is probably just anothother one of the areas where it's doing it's own thing.

Dear Thomas, I appreciate the answer.

Having read up quite a lot about this, it would seem that the Pegasus email client will accept a direct connection from Hotmail if one relaxes the certificate requirements, also my local email client, Forte Agent, will collect the mail OK without "adjustment".

I had hoped to use MercuryD for the function, but alas it seems there's no way to relax Mercury's requirements and get it to ignore the "invalid" certificate that Hotmail provides.

Thanks again anyway, I guess I'll just leave it as unresolved.

Correct, the guy that does the TLS/SSL for PMail says that the Hotmail certificate is broken.   If not authenticated it works.

I've brought this to the attention of David Harris.  I've asked for him to add the disabling of this function in MercuryC and MercuryD as well so it will work with Hotmail.  It's not going to get into v4.72, it's in the final stages of gold testing.

Thank you very much! I know it's a small "ask" but it means that my other family members that use our mail server will be able to pick up their Hotmail mail eventually without recourse to playing around with things - a scenario which usually ends in tears in my experience...

Unless you can convince Microsoft to produce a certificate that fully complies to standards there is no solution at present.

hello,

thanks for your answer, but i have tested also the hmailserver and this programm can connect to hotmail (with SSL) and pop3.

Mercury only shows "network error" when i want to connect.

(Hmailserver has no certificat)

??

(My settings in MercuryD for hotmail: POP3 Host: pop3.live.com | username: <<my-email-adress>> | password: <<password from email>> | PCP/IP port: 995 , SSL encryption using STLS command)

Please see earlier post from JohnJH and Thomas about this. There is presently no way to make MercuryD ignore the certificate problems.

(Hmailserver has no certificat)

It has nothing at all to do with any certificate provided by Mercury/32; the problem is with the certificate provided by Hotmail.  Mercury is validating the certificate provided by the Hotmail server using Peter Gutmann's "cryptlib" and Hotmail is providing an invalid certificate so the process fails.  MercuryC and MercuryD need to be changed to add the ability to disable the certificate certification like is done in PMail for it to work with Hotmail's bad certificate.  This has been passed to David but the fix will not get into v4.72 since it's in the final release cycle.
