I have never set up an email server before so please bare with me.

I have a server running 2003 Server

I have Mercury.

I just want to email people on the local netowrk, not go outside.

I don't know what to put where in the Mercury Configuration.

I do not have a DNS server.

I don't think I have a domain. I just have ip addresses.

Lets say I have instakked Mercury on 192.168.1.100

If have to clients at.

 This is Freds computer

192.168.1.110

Uses Thunderbird

This is Wilmas computer

192.168.1.120

Uses Outlook

What do I setup and where to get this to work internally?

I am completly lost.

Thanks for the help.

Note that Mercury is not really intended for your environment. It is, after all, an Internet mail system. Outlook and Thunderbird are similarly set up for Internet use too, so are not well-suited to this task.

If at all possible, I would highly recommend installing Pegasus Mail on the server in multi-user standalone mode and configure it to store the mailboxes on the server (use a URL path to the server mailboxes via a share that the users have access). Then put a shortcut icon on the desktops that start up Pegasus Mail. Disable the Internet capability of Pegasus Mail via the "-Z 1" command line option in the shortcut icon.

Install Mercury using local mailboxes. Since you don't have a dns use a dummy, like myhomenetwork.local.

During install of Mercury, check MercuryS and MercuryP (you don't need MercuryE or MercuryC since they will route emails off your host - at least for now).

Add as local domain both the IP: [192.168.1.100] and f.ex. myhomenetwork.local if you care to use neater email aliases.

Add two local mailboxes, Fred and Wilma (Flintstone).  Then add the aliases: fred@myhomenetwork.local == Fred and similar for Wilma

In each client, add smtp server 192.168.1.100 and the same value for Pop3.

That is all there is to it, in order to email between each other using Mercury.

As I said I'm a bit slow. What is?

Add as local domain both the IP: [192.168.1.100] and f.ex. myhomenetwork.local if you care to use neater email aliases.

Sorry.

Also do I have to reinstall or can I turn off the extras through the configuration?

Thanks,

I am guessing that when you say add mailboxes you are manually adding folders under mercury\mai like this

mercury\mail\fred

mercury\mail\wilma

I don't have to add users, just aliases?

Thanks again,

Chris

f.ex. = for example.

In other words

  1. Click on Configuration -> Mercury Core Module... menu option.
  2. Click on Local Domains tab.
  3. Click Add New Domain button.
  4. Type in gibberish for "Local host or server"; for Internet Name, type in the following and click OK: myhomenetwork.local
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 and in place of "myhomenetwork.local", use: [192.168.1.100]
  6. Click OK to close Mercury Core Module Configuration dialog.

To add mailboxes, click on the Configuration -> Manage Local Users... menu option.  By default, the mailboxes will be created under the following structure:  C:\MERCURY\USERS\

Create mailboxes with the usernames Fred and Wilma, being sure to specify a Mail Password (APOP Secret is optional and not supported by many mail clients).  Leave both checkboxes disabled.

Now, assuming you've specified myhomenetwork.local and [192.168.1.100] as local domains, Mercury will now recognize and properly deliver incoming email for:

fred@myhomenetwork.local

fred@[192.168.1.100]

wilma@myhomenetwork.local

I guess I don't need to define Aliass.

Do I have to add an account to look at the myhomenetwork.local in my email client? (Thunderbird)

Thank you so much for your help.

Hi Again,

It just never ends.

I tried setting up my TBird and it looks like something sent but I can't find it.

The only files in fred and wilma folder are the password files.

I think I'm missing something, besides a brain.

My time this week is extremely limited. - so, Please remind me personally next week about this. I'll have some time in the evenings and will try to compose a "True beginners guide for Pegasus Mail and Mercury" in a local environment for a modern mutlimedia home. // with images .... //

> I guess I don't need to define Aliass.

If you want, you can create aliases that map fred@myhomenetwork.local to fred and wilma@myhomenetwork.local to wilma, but that is optional as long as you have myhomenetwork.local listed in the Local Domains tab of the Mercury core module configuration.

> Do I have to add an account to look at the myhomenetwork.local in my email client? (Thunderbird)

Yes, of course.  Otherwise Thunderbird has no idea where to find the mail, which will be sitting on the Mercury server.  Also, you have to tell Thunderbird where to send the outgoing mail, which would be the Mercury server as well.  Thus, within Thunderbird, find where you configure the SMTP and POP3 server entries.  Set both of them to be the IP address of your Mercury server.  In the POP3 configuration in Thunderbird, configure the username and password exactly like you set it up within Mercury for one of the users.  Also configure Thunderbird with the correct "From" address.  e.g. fred@myhomenetwork.local

> How does it know which computer to send the mail to?

?? Thunderbird or Mercury?  Mercury doesn't seend the mail to any computer.  The clients are supposed to download the mail from Mercury via POP3.  You have to configure Thunderbird's POP3 profile so that it can download new mail from the Mercury server via the POP3 protocol.

> I tried setting up my TBird and it looks like something sent but I can't find it. The only files in fred and wilma folder are the password files.

Please check the Mercury console windows.  Anything sent from TBird to Mercury should show up in the MercuryS SMTP Server module window.  Assuming that happened correctly, the Mercury core module window would be the next to process the message and to deliver it into the recipient user's local mailbox on the Mercury server.  It should appear as a .CNM file in the user's Mercury mailbox, along with the password file.  Obviously something in the MercuryS or Mercury core processes didn't work, meaning something is misconfigured.  Check those console windows and let me know what happened.  You can also check the log files, which usually will be in a LOGS subdirectory under the Mercury program directory.

Thanks for the info.

Still doesn't work. The only file in the username folder is the password file.

In TBird I have the SMTP and POP3 as follows

AccountName fred@mydomain.local

Outgoing server is My Domain - 192.168.1.5

Server Settings

Server Name 192.168.1.5

username: fred

Is there anything else you need?

Thanks for your help.

You said in a previous post that Mercury was installed at 192.168.1.100

If you are trying to setup your mail clients to 192.168.1.5 that would be your problem.

I found one problem I was doing. I wasn't selecting the Mercury SMTP server to send my mail. Am now.

Can I send a message to fred@mydomain.local from TBird using the fred@mydomain.local domain?
