Sometimes images show up sometimes they don't

I have a similar problem - - sometimes the images in HTML messages show up - sometimes I get just the gray boxes.  I always get the BearHTML counter at the bottom left of the status bar - shows the images being downloaded.

At the moment,  I have PM 4.51 installed on two XP Pro machines and one Vista HP (all are fully patched).  For the past several days, the XP boxes show pics just fine - the Vista machine will only occassionaly shows them to me.  I have had periods when an XP won't show them either.  When I do see pics - they also end up in the cache folder - otherwise it seems that the download didn't really get them.  I have tried disabling both the firewall and virus scanning just to be sure I'm not blocking them - same results.

I do have Tools / Options / Message Reader set to automatically display remote-linked graphics and I have the Winsock32 set to load Always.  I've done a reinstall/over install of PM to be sure the BearHTML files are not bad - same results - - and I've downloaded the Bear files along and copied them into the Pmail folder - same results.

 Thanks for any insight

Mark

I'm subscribed to a mailing list from which I receive a comic strip every day (and a very funny one, I might add: http://www.gocomics.com/poochcafe/). However, sometimes the image shows up in the mail and sometimes it doesn't, in which case I have to use the 'Open message in web browser' function. Anyone any ideas?

Cheers!
Steffan

No, not unless you give more information.  How about posting the headers of one of them?

Sorry... do you mean the headers in 'Raw View'?

A quick look at the website and I see why images don't show. the is no META BASE= tag in the html header block. so references to:

href="/explore/comics" will fail as the domain name is not supplied. However it will work in a browser as you have to supply the domain name
as part of the full Url when you invoke the browser.
So you will have to "invoke in a browser" to enjoy the comics

Ah, but the funny thing is that sometimes they show and sometimes they don't. Anyway, I'll just invoke my browser whenever I have to, no problem. Thanks very much!

That looks OK - it's an HTML-only email with a single MIME part.  So it must be something in the HTML that's causing the external image not to load - assuming you have 'allowed' images from the source.

If you like (and only if you like), I could forward two emails to you so you can check the html code. One in which the comic shows and one in which it doesn't. I've checked the code of the two messages superficially and couldn't find any abnomalies.

Sure, forward them or zip the .cnm files up and send them to paul at blakecomp.co.uk

Just to repeat myself in order to make investigation easier.  Look for any IMG tag that looks like this:

img src=" /directoryname/filename"  instead of a full Url.  This Src will not display in Pegasus Mail unless there is a  Meta base= tag also present in the Header section of the html.

A funny thing happened, though. When I opened the messages today, the images showed in both messages, even in the one in which it refused to load.

Hi guys.

This is my first post so please excuse me if I stuff up.

I'm a long time user of this great email client. It's been mainly bug free for me with only a couple of outstanding issues of which there are work arounds.

I basically view all of my emails in preview mode. Occassionally I'll open up an email to read.

There is one daily subscription that I am a member of, and with 4.41 in preview mode I'd click "Show Pictures" in the right click menu and the pics would download and show.

Ever since upgrading to 4.51 about 2 weeks ago, only once have I seen the pictures. I see that all pictures have downloaded (Cache hits 0 Downloads 12 Total 12), but that's it. Still a blank screen. Even with the email opened I still cannot get the pictures to show.

I'm running just plain PM under XP Pro SP3 fully patched.

I've got 4.41 on another PC and it will show pictures in preview when I ask it to do so. I just checked this with the same email.

A difference I have noticed is if I hover over the grey box area where a hyperlink image is, it will show just the top domain link (http://app1.mailout.com) whereas in 4.41 it will show the domain with the id parameter (http://app1.mailout.com/click.app?transid=GAmp48324jbL9eid=GAmp=70075jbL etc.....).

Any ideas?

Thank you.

Just as an update on this, there appears to be some intermittent problem, possibly on the server, which causes the image retrieval to fail.  Since this happens quite rarely, it is difficult to locate the fault.

There's an option in BearHtml.ini changing this, open a HTML message, click it and type Shift + F1 to get more detailed information about the ShortInfo option.
