Cant add a username with an @ in the username.

Han is correct. This part differs Mercury from some other products, that in my view have misunderstood the negative impact a direct association with a maildrop and just one e-mail address. Defining the maildrops apart from the addresses has the following benefits out of a server standpoint:

  • makes it much harder to try and harvest maildrop/password pairs as the maildrop name isn't public
  • eases the teaching that a maildrop is a "box" that can be associated with more than just one address
  • is syntactically correct in correlation to most e-mail clients, that state Username as the equivalent for a maildrop, and hold separate settings for name and address.

The only thing I think is missing, is, that since the association with an alias and a maildrop is possible, it would have been nice to, via a setting, allow or disallow authentication in all modules between aliases and their direct associated maildrop passwords - as well as a setting enforcing strong maildrop passwords. Hopefully that will come true some day for both NetWare, Windows integrated and stand alone operations of Mercury.

I wanted to be able to just add half a dozen users to a small home server.
It would be really handy to have there username as firstname.lastname@domainname.com

When I try and create a user via the Manage Local Users dialog when I hit Add then fill in the username when clicking OK it doesn't do anything, the dialog won't close.

Can I manually add the users editing the pmail.usr and creating a folder?

or is there another way to do this?

Cheers
Adam

The username should just be a name without any domain part or period, like "adam". It will be associated will all domains and hostnames you specify as local for the server.

In Core configuration / Advanced you can specify if you want Mercury to automatically recognize Firstname.Lastname or Initital.Lastname name forms, based on the name as entered in the Personal name field.

If you need more precise control of local mail addresses you can create aliases in firstname.lastname@domainname.com form, pointing to the correct username.

Hmm so I can't make it really easy for the end user to login by saying that there username for imap is the same as there email address?

No, the Pegasus Mail user name can have only 8 characters. This name is only used to startup. So whenever you create a shortcut for each user adding the -i <username> to it, they don't even have to know that name. See Help -> Commandline options in WinPMail.

Yes but that file is shared by Pegasus Mail and Mercury/32, and must meet that 8-char specifications, AFAIK.
