The File | Change user was removed since it caused Pegasus Mail to crash
in many instances.  The best way to perform this function now is to run
separate instances of Pegasus Mail.

1.  Right click on the WinPMail shortcut and select "Properties".

2.  Select the "Shortcut" tab.

3.  Edit the "Target line" to add the commandline option.

A commandline option will generally look like the following:

c:\pmail\winpm-32.exe -i thomas -ms

or when using long directory names

"c:\Program Files\pmail\winpm-32.exe" -i thomas -ms

You create a shortcut for each user you use quite often and one without
the -I <username>.  Now all you have to do is hit the proper shortcut to
have any user you want opened and running.

You can also just use "Add mailbox to list" to point at these other
accounts and then associate an identity with each folder in the accounts
so that forwards and replies will come from the correct user.

I'm a long time user of Pmail (12 years) yet did not know there was a new version until checking the site yesterday.

I happily read David's update.  I've often wondered how he's managed to develop the software without some fee structure.  A giant effort.  After reading his story I was prepared to send a donation & join the 1000.  I loaded the new version & checked for potential changes that would directly affect how I've been using PM for years.  The problem I've created for myself is not being able to switch users.  It's defaulted to Standalone Single User Mode.

Why did the update ignore the config settings and default to Standalone Single User mode?  I've spent hours looking for keywords in blogs, the forum and help on this topic.  Only one post mentions "switching users" with little direction.

I've uninstalled & reloaded the software on one of my laptops to see if that would help.  During that process it asked for selection of the various operating modes, I selected No 2.  It hasn't fixed the problem.

Reading the article on the knowledgebase called "Installing WinPMail & Mercury/32 for multi-user standalone mode" seems to be more about the Mercury versioin than WinPMail.

I've joined this community to find a solution to my dilemma.

Thank you.

Manual.pdf (in Pegasus Mail's installation directory) explains how to do this on page 170 (its FAQ section). Here's a copy:

I installed Pegasus Mail in Single-user mode but now I want to switch to Multi-user mode
because I need more than one user. How can I do this and keep all my existing mail files?
Follow these steps:
1: Run your single-user copy of Pegasus Mail, select "Help", then "About Pegasus
Mail". Click the "Info" button, and find the entry in the list called "Home mailbox loca-
tion". Note this directory down on a piece of paper, then cancel out of the dialog and quit
from Pegasus Mail immediately.
2: Make sure that Pegasus Mail is not running. Now, in the directory where Pegasus Mail
is installed, locate the file PMAIL.CFG. Delete this file.
3: Run Pegasus Mail again. It will behave as if being started for the first time. Choose
Multi-user mode, tell Pegasus Mail where to place your mailbox directories, then create
a user for yourself and login as that user.
4: Select "Help", then "About Pegasus Mail". Click the "Info" button, and find the entry
in the list called "Home mailbox location". Note this directory down on the piece of
paper you used in (1), then cancel out of the dialog and quit from Pegasus Mail immedi-
ately.
5: Copy all the files in the directory you noted down in (1) into the directory you noted
down in (4). You can use Windows Explorer or a DOS COPY command in a command
prompt session to do this.
The next time you run Pegasus Mail as the new user, it should see all the same mail files
and settings that you previously had in single-user mode. Once you are sure that the files
have been safely transferred, you can delete the contents of the directory you noted down
in (1).

Thank you for that.  I've successfully made the changes in the requisite folders but cannot get the program to operate in anything other than standalone mode.  I've selected all 3 options when it initialises for the fist time, checking the file in "Help", "About", "Info".

Is there a specific place to amend in the ini files to change a setting?

I note in the PMAIL.INI files the question "Running in Standalone Mode?" = N

What should this be changed to?

Will this make a difference?

Thanks again

Mark

I note in the PMAIL.INI files the question "Running in Standalone Mode?" = N

If you are not running with Netware you are running in the standalone mode.  This does not need to be changed.  You do need to note the current HOME and NEW mail directory and verify that there is a pmail.usr at the top of the mailbox structure and that there are multiple mail user subdirectories.  The basic Multiuser structure is

 C:\pmail\programs                                              the PMail programs

C:\pmail\mail                                                       the pmail.usr file

c:\pmail\mail\user1                                               the PMail user directories

.

.

c:\pmail\mail\user_n

With this setup when you run pconfig.exe from the c:\pmail\programs directory you will see c:\pmail\mail\~8 for the Standalone HOME and NEW mail directory spec.

The pmail.usr file looks something like

A;Admin;Mail Administrator
A;thomas;Test User

The A is for an admin user, the U will be used for a normal user.

What should this be changed to?

Will this make a difference?

Thanks again

I've checked settings recommended and all are correct.

I'm still not seeing the "Switch User" at the bottom of the "File" menu.

How do you switch between users?
