If you set 'powerschool' as a local user and set up the alias as above Merc won't be trying to send postmaster notifications offsite.

The only failures Merc will see is from your relay, and if that is causing failures, trying to send failure notifications through it is not going to work.

Failures for bad address or whatever to your student parents etc will be handled by the echalk servers and delivered back to the from address, powerschool@upson... which is presumably a mailbox you have set up with them.

So you only need to get them to relay mail from powerschool@upson....

Also, if you clear out the Queue folder, it will stop trying to send the OLD failure messages.

We are using Mercury Mail to send out alerts to our parents about their child's grades, attenedance, etc.  I got it set up and working without to much trouble.  One dau I noticed that it Mercury  Mail was not running on the server.  I started it, and after 10 seconds it shuts down.  I tried it again, and the same thing happened.  I looke in the event logs on the serve and saw nothing about Mercury Mail.  Any ideas?

Thanks,

Brandon

The first thing that comes to mind is that the mercury.ini file has been trashed.  Try copying (or rename) the file mercury.bak (or mercury.bk1) to mercury.ini and try again.

Mercury mail shuts down once it starts to process messages.  Does mecury mail have a limited time it will work before you have to pay for it?

More info needed.  How are you sending the Mail?  What is the error message?  It would help if you provided your mercury.ini and a session log of the failure.

Does Mercury mail

have a limited time it will work before you have to pay for it?

Nope

Where did that error occur?

It occured when the message was being sent.

I am not using Mercury to check mail, just send mail (just using smtp).  It was working just fine before, but then something happend.

It occured when the message was being sent.
In your mail client? In the MercC status window? Towed behind a plane flying past your window? [:P]
I am not using Mercury to check mail, just send mail (just using smtp).
Mercury sends error messages to a local postmaster account which you specify in Core config. You have specified the local user "powerschool" which you presumably have also created and given a password with the "Manage local users" dialog. To check these error messages you must log in to your Mercury server using your favourite mail client via POP3 (MercP module must be active) or IMAP (MercI must be active) with the username "powerschool" and the correct password for this user.
It was working just fine before, but then something happend.
Turn on session logging in MercC and try to send mail. Then post that session log here.

Let me give you more  information that will allow you to help me more.

We use E-chalk as our e-mail provider.  Powerschool is the name of the server that runs our Student Information System, and also has Mercury installed on it.  Our E-mail address end in @upson.k12.ga.us.  I want all undeliverable and other notifacations to go to powerschool@upson.k12.ga.us.  The Internet address of the powerschool server is powerschool.upson.k12.ga.us  Taking the helo out of the ini file and replacing it with smtp stoped Mercury mail from crashing.  Now, when I try a test mail, nothing happens.

If you need anymore information please let me know.  I hope this tell you a little more about my configuration.

Nevermind.  The mails are going into the que, and it says they are being sent out, but If i check the E-mail I sent it to, I do not get the message.

The problem with having admin notifications going to a non-local address is that, if these can't be delivered for any reason (network interrupted, receiving server down etc) this will generate a cascading series of undeliverable messages that continues until the connection returns or you run out of disk space.

It is highly reccomended that you have the postmaster account as a local account on the server.
Now, when I try a test mail, nothing happens.

If you need anymore information please let me know.
Please explain exactly what you are doing and post session logs of the attempt for both MercS, which is receiving the mail from your client & MercC, which is forwarding to the relay server.

Session logging can be enabled in the config dialog for each protocol module and records every exchange between client & server. It soaks up a lot of disk space so remember to turn it off when finished

So Mercury seems to be working fine, MercS is successfully receiving your mail, Core is successfully passing it to MercC for external delivery, and MercC is successfully delivering it to (as far as it knows) smtp.echalk.com

The problem is that AVG is intercepting the traffic and telling MercC that smtp.echalk.com has successfully received the mail.

What it is doing with your mail after that I have no idea, but presumably it is not being delivered correctly.

I strongly suggest turning off AVG's interception of your email traffic as it usually causes a lot more trouble than it is worth.

While there you should make sure AVG is configured to NOT SCAN ANY of the Mercury folders. This WILL cause you problems.

For AV scanning on mail passing through Mercury I highly recommend using the clamwall daemon (included in the Mercury download or available from http://www.ararat.cz/doku.php/en:clamwall) and the clamav build from http://hideout.ath.cx/clamav/.

It is designed work extremely well with Mercury and is pretty much 'set & forget'.

This is not an error generated by Mercury. MercC is reporting that error coming from your relay server, smtp.echalk.com.

You will need to talk to them about allowing mail from the postmaster address (as well as your existing addresses) to be relayed through.

Also, as the mail for the domain upson.k12.ga.us is actually being handled by echalk.com, they should be the ones generating any postmaster errors for that domain.

Your servers errors should probably come from postmaster@powerschool.upson.k12.ga.us so you should change your settings back to
