if I want to get rid of any irrelevant text in the message I reply to, be it signatures, disclaimers or whatever, I just reply to a selected portion of the message. However, I can't possibly imagine that you're not aware of this option. More likely, it doesn't satisfy your (picky, picky :-)) needs.
More seriously: Do you know of any email client that *is* capable of doing this?
Still seriously but a little less seriously than the previous two seriouslies: I was aware of the HYPHEN HYPHEN bit, but didn't know it had to be followed by SPACE in order to be recognised as a signature block.

Hmmm. Lots to reply to.
Firstly, yes I knew about the reply-to-portion option, though I only found out about it relatively recently - within the last couple of years, when I've been a Pmail user for about ten years. To be honest I don't use it but if I remembered it (which is far more likely now), I probably would. A lot.
Next, well, this thread was prompted because I received a message yesterday which appeared to have an automatically-removed signature. Of course the sender may have edited it himself - I'll be sure to ask him - but it smelt like it had been done automatically to me. The x-mailer was Evolution 2.26.1 which is, I believe, a Linux thing (though it's probably available on Win as well).
The idea regarding the hyphen hyphen space thing was something that I could have sworn that I originally got from the Pegasus help files, but I can't find anything in the 4.5 help system. Although, in its new, Vista-friendly format, I can't search - I can only browse the index. That said, I know I've seen things online about it. I bet if you Wikipedia for e-mail signature, it'll be there.
What about Thomas' macro idea? Yes, I saw that when you first posted the other thread some months back. I think the concept is nice although I can imagine that the implementation would be a nightmare to get right. Whether it would be flexible enough to be truly useful, I don't know. I also think that the time and effort that would be required from David Harris would be huge, and I really don't think that there is enough of a need (at present at least) to justify the undertaking of such a project.
Finally, this thread might be about the highest-class conversation on the site in terms of the average post-points of the participants. Let's ask the other Thomas to contribute, along with Dilbert and Michael idw. The might of these people combined could bring about some kind of inter-dimensional crossover event...
Apologies. I'm slightly weird tonight, obviously. Need more sleep. :)
