New Pegasus can't locate old mailbox -- Windows 7 x64

I spent 3 hours dancing the dance of fools in 32 bit windows 7 with a similar problem. Installed Win7, installed Pegasus, pointed Pegasus to my old mail drive - it saw all the user accounts, happily I exited and thereafter I'd only ever get "user does not exist".

I tried UNC paths and drive letter paths, always the same. pcconfig always came up with crippled strings when I recalled it. 3 or 4 uninstalls, wipes and new attempts later I deleted pmain.cfg in the pmail directory. Again pmail found the old mail drive (multiple user option).

This time I double clicked on each and every user in the window, and Eureka! Pegasus can now find the users. I thought that the .usr file should've taken care of that in the first place, but apparently not. Don't recall ever having to do that before.

Unfortunately, every time I try to start Pmail now, Win7 throws up a requester about 'unknown publisher'. What a pain. I haven't been able to figure out how to set  clearance for pmail yet.

Much, much worse, however is, that Mercury can pick up mail, but doesn't sort it into the right place any more. Major bugbear. I shall move a query that problem over into the right forum later ...

I installed PM v4.51 on a new computer running Windows 7 x64. But I can't make it find the old mailbox folder. I had copied the old mailbox folder to the new computer over my home wireless network.

THE ORIGINAL CONFIGURATION:
Pegasus 4.41 on Windows98SE in D:\Program Files\Pmail
Mailbox location: E:\Mail\Pmail
Newmail location: E:\Mail\Pmail\Newmail

THE NEW CONFIGURATION:
Pegasus 4.51 newly installed on a Dell Laptop with Windows 7 x64 in C:\PMAIL
Mailbox location: C:\Users\MyUserName\_My_Created_Files\Mail\Pmail\
Newmail location: C:\Users\MyUserName\_My_Created_Files\Mail\Pmail\ Newmail

I tried to use Pconfig.exe to address the mailbox folder and newmail folder, but it wouldn't run on Windows 7 x64.

I used [Tools][Options][General settings][Mailbox Location]. Still didn't find the mailbox.

I edited PMAIL\MAIL\ADMIN\PMAIL.INI and changed the addresses of the mailbox and newmail as shown above for the new configuration. Still didn't find the mailboxes.

Should I copy the mailbox files to PM's default location to get it running, and then having PM moving them to my preferred location? If so, which folder is the <default>? Is that the right approach or is there another way?

I don't remember why I originally put mail and new mail are in different folders. I can combine them if that would be a preferred way.

Advice will be appreciated,
Stan Hilliard

Get a copy of DOSBox from here http://www.dosbox.com/download.php?main=1 and install it on your system.  It will allow you to run any 16-bit MS-DOS programs.

When you enter the path name use the old MS-DOS form, i.e.

c:\users\myuser~1\_My_cr~1\mail\pmail\newmail

FWIW, I really do not like burying programs like this but to each his own. ;-)

I have installed DOSbox on my Windows 7 computer and can start pconfig.exe.

Q1 - I assume I should set up Pegasus as as stand alone mode, Is that right?
(My plan is to keep the original mailbox on my desktop Win98SE PC and have a separate mailbox on the Win 7 laptop. I will synchronize the two mailboxes over my home wireless network.)

I notice in the default Pegasus configuration that the mail and newmail folders are the same. I currently have newmail as a sub folder within the mail folder. I don't know how I got started like that many years ago.
Q2 - Would it be an advantage if I put the newmail files in the mail folder?.

Sounds reasonable.

I run them split and it works for me.  That's because I use a number of different users that point to the same home mail directory.

Internal username                         = support
Working home mailbox location    = \\tstephenson\c_drive\pmail\mail\thomas
New mailbox location                    = \\tstephenson\c_drive\PMAIL\MAIL\support

However the Standalone HOME and NEW mail directory spec in pconfig.exe shows:

Home mailbox :    [\\tstephenson\c_drive\PMAIL\MAIL\~n  ]
New mailbox  :     \\tstephenson\c_drive\PMAIL\MAIL\~n
Asynch gateway? :  N

So when I start Pegasus Mail looks at the pmail.cfg and finds the new mail directory and reads the pmail.ini file and sees that the HOME mail directory was changed to the user Thomas.

[General]
Personal name                             = Thomas R. Stephenson
Home mailbox location                     = \\tstephenson\c_drive\pmail\mail\thomas

I set the paths in pconfig but now at start-up Pegasus wants a username.  I didn't use a username on the old computer.  I prefer not to have a username for now because I am the only user.

Q1 - How can I eliminate the need for a usename?

Also, pconfig.exe changed the mailbox path in C:\PMAIL\mail\admin\pmail.ini. But it did not add the right path to newmail. It used C:\Pmail\mail\admin\. I tried replacing that path with the path to newmail, but I can't check if that works because I can't get past the username request.

Also, pconfig wrote the mailbox address in pmail.ini as the expanded DOS form, changing  my \_My_Cr~1\ to \_My_Created_Files\.

Set the path correctly or make sure you have all rights to this directory.  You are being asked for your username because Pegasus Mail cannot find the mail directory or the pmail.usr file.

> Also, pconfig.exe changed the mailbox path in C:\PMAIL\mail\admin\pmail.ini. But it did not add the right path to

This is wrong.  The string must either end with a username or a ~8/~n  The basic structure is:

C:\pmail\mail                                           the location of the pmail.usr file
C:\pmail\mail\username                           the location of the mailboxes

There is the possibility of using a string like c:\pmail\mail\~8\pmail to locate the mail directories where the ~8 is replaced by the requested username but this is unusual.

I have not succeeded in getting Pegasus to find the mailbox.

I have shortened the path to the mailbox folders.  Explorer seems to have two paths to the mailbox. I tried both of these.

For example, NewMail:
Stan Hilliard\_My_Created_Files\Mail\NewMail\~n
C:\Users\Stan\_My_Created_Files\Mail\Newmail\~n

I am confused about specifying paths in Windows 7.

You showed a syntax where I would put a \username at the end of the path, but I don't know what username to use. I tried shilliard because my email is shilliard@samplingplans.com. That did not work. It also did not work to enter shilliard on the startup window.

I could use all DOS filenames but I don't know the 8 char name for Stan Hilliard. I seem to remember that blanks get removed? Like StanHi~1.

Here are the current PM configuration file locations:

PMAIL.CFG, in C:\PMAIL\Program\
Contains path to newmail and mail folders.

PMAIL.USR, in C:\PMAIL\MAIL\
Contains A; Admin; Mail Administrator

PMAIL.INI, two copies:
C:\Users\Stan\_My_Created_Files\Mail\Newmail
C:\PMAIL\MAIL\ADMIN
The two Pmail.ini are identical. I might have copied one to the other location. They contain long-form paths through C:\User and use my full name as Stan Hilliard

Invalid path.

> C:\Users\Stan\_My_Created_Files\Mail\Newmail\~n

The ~n should specify the directory where the pmail.ini and *.CNM files are located for the NEW mail directory.

The ~n should specify the directory where the PMM & PMI files are located for the HOME mail directory.

I would use c:\uses\stan\_my_cre~1\mail\newmail\~n if this is where the pmail.ini file is located.

> I am confused about specifying paths in Windows 7.

No different than any other windows system.  It's either a UNC so Windows path.

drive:\directory\subdirectory

\\server\volume\directory\subdirectory

The username is the dame of the directory right below the pmail.usr file.

The structure is such that the users mailboxes (usernames) are located in th directory structure just below the file.

As a follow-up. One thing you can do is move the mail (except the pmail.ini) from you old mail directories to this mail directory.  This would require that the pconfig.exe specify c:\pmail\mail\~n to point at this directory on startup.

You would need all rights to the entire directory structure.

As a follow-up. One thing you can do is move the mail (except the pmail.ini) from you old mail directories to this mail directory.  This would require that the pconfig.exe specify c:\pmail\mail\~n to point at this directory on startup.

You would need all rights to the entire directory structure.

My new install points to C:\PMAIL\MAIL for both newmail and saved mail -- according to Pconfig. But when I download an email, Pegasus puts it in C:\PMAIL\MAIL\ADMIN. I used PMAIL\Programs\Pconfig.exe  to set the mailbox to C:\PMAIL\MAIL but the mail still goes to \ADMIN\. This is counter-intuitive to me.

Q1 - What is the logic of this?

Q2 - What is \ADMIN\ intended for?

I created a new folder in Pegasus and moved the new email to it. The PMM and PMI files stayed in \ADMIN\. I want the new mail to be in a separate folder. But when I change the newmail folder with Pconfig.exe that causes the default answer on the third line in Pconfig from N to Y. I change it back to Y but that causes the start-up window to ask for a username again. I couldn't undo this problem and had to re-install Pegasus.

Q3 - What explains this? What can I do?

Ultimately I want to have mail and email separate folders under the C:\users\stan\_Files\Mail\  and ...\Mail\NewMail\

Advice will be appreciated,

OK, it seems to me that the problem might be fairly simple, though if that were the case I can only imagine you've caught Thomas in a bad week as he's so hot normally. Perhaps what I'm about to say will not fix the problem, but maybe it will enlighten you enough to be able to do something.

It seems as if you do not properly understand the meanings of the paths you are editing. I'll explain using the default settings.

C:\PMAIL\MAIL\ is the folder that contains PMAIL.USR (the file which tells Pegasus which users it has) and also a separate folder for each of these users. The folder names should match the users in PMAIL.USR, and should have no more than eight characters.

So, when you've seen C:\PMAIL\MAIL\ADMIN, that is referring to the mailbox of a user called "Admin". This account is created automatically when you first install Pegasus, unless you specify something else. A single person using Pegasus may very well be known to the program as "Admin". If it is the only user, Pegasus probably shouldn't ask for a log in, though that might be dependent on Multi-user/single-user mode.

The default new mail directory is C:\PMAIL\MAIL\~8 where the "~8" simply means "substitute the username of the user". Therefore you can see that your mailbox (i.e. folders, address books, etc) and your new mail messages (*.CNM files) are all stored in a single directory by default.

Your system seems, as you say, to have been altered to put new messages in a subfolder of your mailbox. This subfolder is apparently called "newmail".

Use PCONFIG to point at your newly-copied folders again. If Pegasus asks you for a username, try Admin, because that's what it appears your Pegasus account is called.

Hope that makes things clearer for you.

If you have installed Pmail in multi-user mode (it seems so), note that you have to copy your PMAIL.USR to your new directory. On my system, Pmail is installed in C:\Programme\PMAIL and I switched the mail-directories using PCONFIG.EXE to D:\PEGASUS\~8, home mailbox and new mailbox are in the same directory.~8 is the Pegasus Mail user name (Adresses / User Management in WinPMail), not a Windows user name.

I installed WinPmail in multi-user mode. There is only one Pegasus Mail-user installed, who is called "Martin", so D:\PEGASUS\MARTIN is my mail- and newmail-directory and PMAIL.USR is placed in D:\PEGASUS. I copied it from the former "C:\Programme\Pmail\Mail" directory.

Because there is only one Pegasus Mail user installed, WinPMail does not ask for a username, if the program starts.

Pegasus asks for my username only when the pconfig.exe path is
C:\Users\Stan\_Myfiles\Mail\NewMail~8
The username window does not recognize "Admin" as the correct  username.

Pegasus does not ask for the username when the pconfig.exe path is
C:\PMAIL\MAIL~8
When this is true, the Pegasus gets the correct trays and forums from:
C:\Users\Stan\_Myfiles\Mail\
and puts them in the left pane correctly.

My problem is making Pegasus recognize the newmail folder, which is located:
     c:\Users\Stan\_MyFiles\Mail\NewMail
I performed the tests below, using pconfig.exe to configure the following path-sets that I labeled A, B, and C.

A:
mailbox -- c:\pmail\mail\~N
newmail – c:\pmail\mail\~N

B:
mailbox -- c:\Users\Stan\_MyFiles\Mail\~8
newmail – c:\Users\Stan\_MyFiles\Mail\NewMail\~8

C:
mailbox -- c:\Users\Stan\_MyFiles\Mail\~8
newmail – c:\pmail\mail\~N or 8

I performed eight steps with the following results – in the order listed:

1 Change path A --->B
Pegasus showed the username window.

2 Change N --->8
Pegasus showed the username window.

3 Change  path B -->C
Startup OK.
[File][Mail folders] --->”error initializing printer”
Pegasus showed a blank folder window.
[Tools][Options][Mailbox Location] shows path B.

4 Change path B --->A
Startup OK.
[File][Mail folders] --->”error initializing printer”
Pegasus showed a blank folder window.
[Tools][Options][Mailbox Location] shows path B.

5 Change path A --->B, rt-click, [run as administrator]
Msg: "Do you want to allow the following program from an unknown publisherto make changes to this computer: winpm-32.exe" (OK)
Pegasus showed the username window.

6 Change path B --->C
Pegasus showed the correct mail folders, but empty newmail window.
[Tools][Options][Mailbox Location] shows path B.

7 Change path C --->B, with DOS name newmail~1
Pegasus showed the username window.

8 Change path B --->C
Pegasus showed the correct mail folders, but empty newmail window.
[Tools][Options][Mailbox Location] shows path B.

So far I have failed to make Pegasus access the folder with existing new mail in it. One thing I can think of is that the \newmail\ folder contains a PMAIL.INI that I have edited since copying \newmail\ from the other computer. Is there a way to test it or regenerate it?

OK, first things first. Am I correct in thinking that you have copied your original folders to a location of:

c:\Users\Stan\_MyFiles\

and that in that folder you have one called "mail" which in turns contains "Admin" which in turn contains "newmail"? Pegasus is not asking for a password when pointed in this direction because the pmail.usr in ...myfiles\mail\ has only one user defined, that of Admin.

B looks like it might work if you change the newmail line to:

c:\Users\Stan\_MyFiles\Mail\~8\NewMail (remember that the folders within the "mail" folder are named to match various usernames, thus the ~8 being at that point)

That would, I think (cos I haven't tried), make Pegasus think that every user had a separate newmail folder. However, if you're the only user, that would work.

EDIT:

Remind me again why you need a separate new mail folder...?    :)

C:\PMAIL\MAIL\ADMIN\  (edit - I copied this one here based on something I read/misread)
The contents are:
"A;Admin;Mail Administrator"
The same is on the other computer in ...PMAIL\MAIL\

B looks like it might work if you change the newmail line to:

c:\Users\Stan\_MyFiles\Mail\~8\NewMail (remember that the folders within the "mail" folder are named to match various usernames, thus the ~8 being at that point)

That would, I think (cos I haven't tried), make Pegasus think that every user had a separate newmail folder. However, if you're the only user, that would work.

EDIT:

Remind me again why you need a separate new mail folder...?    :)

I probably don't. It has been so many years since I set it up that I can't remember what my thinking was. Maybe it was a default in an early version.

After some googling I am thinking of:
1) Deleting all pmail.usr and reconfigure as a single multiple user named Stan. If that does not work:
2) Copy the contents of \newmail\ into \mail\

OOPs,
I just thought of a reason not to do #2. I want to have matching folders on the two computers so I can travel with the new laptop and then synch the folders between the two machines afterward. If I combine mail and new mail I would have to mess with the win98 desktop also. If I combine folders on one computer I would have to do the same on the other in order to synch them. I would prefer to keep the problem isolated to one computer until it is solved.

OK, first things first. Am I correct in thinking that you have copied your original folders to a location of:

c:\Users\Stan\_MyFiles\

and that in that folder you have one called "mail" which in turns contains "Admin" which in turn contains "newmail"?

OK, we have perhaps found the root of your problem. I don't think you copied the correct set of folders and files when you moved them onto your new laptop.

From what you've told us about the setup on the Win98 machine, Pegasus knows you as the user "Admin". If you look at your drive directories (I'm going to use that word instead of folder from now on whenever I mean the actual folders on your hard drive, rather than in Pegasus) on the Win98 machine, you'll see that there's an 'Admin' directory in there, most likely within a directory called 'mail'.

I believe that what you've done is copy the CONTENTS of the 'Admin' directory (including sub-directories) into the '_MyFiles' directory on your laptop. The problem with this is that you've missed the next level above that i.e. the 'mail' folder, which is vital.

Go back into the Win98 machine, navigate into the 'Pmail' directory, and right-click the 'mail' directory and copy it. Go back to your '_MyFiles' directory on the laptop and paste the lot in there. This should ensure you have the pmail.usr file that you need, as well as the 'Admin' directory.

Now - hopefully - all you need to do is use pconfig to point at ..._MyFiles\mail\~8 and ..._MyFiles\mail\~8\newmail and things should work.

Having said that, what's the betting that I've confused myself in the middle of all that? Give it a go and get back to us. Certainly, re-copying the correct files will make it possible to get things fixed. As you are now, you can't.

This WIN98 configuration is working correctly:
On WIN98: D:\Program Files\PMAIL\MAIL\ADMIN\
WIN98...\PMAIL\  Contains PMAIL.CFG + files that would be in \PMAIL\Programs\ on the laptop.
WIN98...\MAIL\   Contains PMAIL.USR (no other files)
WIN98...\ADMIN\  Contains only 4 CNM files from install dated 12/21/2003
WIN98...\\tower\E\Mail\Pmail\NewMail\ Contains the PMAIL.INI and .CNMs.
(Tower is the computer name of the WIN98. The E:\MAIL\ is an empty

folder on WIN98. The following \Pmail\ contains the same files as are

in Laptop ...\_MyFiles\MAIL\.)

On Laptop: C:\PMAIL\MAIL\ADMIN\
Laptop...\PMAIL\ Empty of files.
Laptop...\MAIL\  Contains PMAIL.USR plus some PMI, PMM, CNM, PM etc.
Laptop...\ADMIN\ Contains PMAIL.INI, PMAIL.USR, 6 recent CNM files
Laptop...\Programs\ Contains PMAIL.CFG + other programs.

The two computers already had identical text in the PMAIL.USR

Text in WIN98 ...PMAIL\MAIL\PMAIL.USR
; PMAIL.USR Pegasus Mail user database.
A;Admin;Mail Administrator

Text in Laptop ...PMAIL\MAIL\PMAIL.USR
; PMAIL.USR Pegasus Mail user database.
A;Admin;Mail Administrator

I copied WIN98 \MAIL\ADMIN\ to the Laptop. I ran pconfig.exe and specified the path.
Run --->username window. Admin doesn't work.

I noticed that on WIN98 \PMAIL\ contains PMAIL.CFG with this contents:
\\tower\E\Mail\Pmail\NewMail                            \\tower\E\Mail\Pmail

(Tower is the computer name of the WIN98. The E:\MAIL\ is an empty folder on WIN98. The following \Pmail\ contains the same files as are in Laptop ...\_MyFiles\MAIL\.)

On Laptop the PMAIL.CFG is in \PMAIL\Programs\ and contains the right paths
C:\USERS\STAN\_MYFILES\MAIL\~8\NEWMAIL                            C:\USERS\STAN\_MYFILES\MAIL\~8
I copied that PMAIL.CFG to \pmail\ and \mail\ and \admin\. Startup is still blocked by  the username window.

I could configure my account "Stan" as a user. Also I could copy the mailboxes to the laptop again, this time leaving the \Pmail\ in the path.
