How can I restore my deleted messages folder?

A thousand thanks for this simple but elusive fix!!  I had just done the same silly thing -- deleted the Deleted folder instead of selecting the 8000 messages in it and deleting them. And PM was not recreating the Deleted folder.

Using the Notepad editor to delete the single line gave me back my Deleted Messages folder up at the top of the list, with 7974 messages in it.  If only there were a way other than remembering to prohibit deleting the actual folder....

I wanted to delete my deleted messages and in doing so I deleted the entire folder thinking it would return when I restarted Pmail.  It did not.  Now I do not know how to restore it.  I created such a folder but the deleted messages do not go into it.  Help!

Thanks!

No need to feel stupid. First, go to Tools | Options | Basic settings and make sure that Preserve deleted messages until Pegasus Mail closes is checked, then try and delete a message, preferably one you can afford to lose - you never know. However, I'm pretty sure you will see the Deleted messages folder now. If you want the Deleted messages folder to stay forever, you can tell Pegasus to do so in Advanced settings by checking Preserve 'Deleted messages' folder between sessions. Hope this helps.

Cheers!

Thanks Steffan for that advice.  I did try that but the folder still has not returned.  I tried creating one myself but deleted messages do not go into that folder.  I also closed and reopened Pmail after making the suggested changes but still no deleted messages folder.  Still hoping to find an answer!  Perhaps I should reinstall the program?

Waste of time since the problem is with your data and not the program.  I suspect the hierarch.pm is hosed.

Try  the following procedure.  This has worked for several others to restore
the functionality of the  message folders:

1.  Use Help | About Pegasus Mail | Info to determine your mail
    directory.  Exit Pegasus mail.

2.  Rename the file HIERARCH.PM in your HOME mail directory to
    HIERARCH.SAV.

3.  Run WinPMail.  Your HIERARCH.PM will be re-created and should
    start working correctly.

Note:  This will delete any tray structure you have created and it
will have to be recreated.  The process will not affect any
mail of mail folders you have, it only affects the display of
           the folders.

If you have a lot of trays CLOSE WinPMail and open the hierarch.pm for editing with an ASCII editor like Notepad and look for the deleted messages folder and delete the line.  The line will look something like this:

0,256,"AM2R38NO:3A15:FOL019FA","14EE6766:My mailbox","Deleted Messages",0,20

Save and then re-run WinPMail.  If the deleted message folder does not exist then the next time you delete a message a new deleted messages folder will be created.

Thanks Thomas!  I used the text editor approch and I deleted the box.  When I restarted the box was back and it had all the deleted messages that I had sent to it from the last few days when there was no box appearing.

I should add that it was an easy fix for anyone in the future.
