Creating an Archive for Pegasus Trays, Folders and Messages

[quote user="Steffan"]

I hope I haven't completely misunderstood what

you're trying to achieve, but have you looked into the possibility of

Adding Mailbox to list (under Folders)?

Cheers!

Hi Steffan, and thanks for the suggestion.

Yes, that is, in fact, the thrust of Thomas R Stephenson's  post mentioned above. However, in starting out with his propsal, I did, in fact Added a Mailbox: Archive, and created one of the main folders, to hold dozens of folders (those with the yellow "Folder" icon in My Mailbox, but called "Trays" when I am adding a new one). I Opened it, then attempted to drag a (Yellow Icon) folder into it, only to be met with the message:

You have attempted to move a folder between two mailboxes and one or both of these mailboxes does not support that operation.

The move operation cannot be performed.

Hint: Try creating a new folder in the destination mailbox, then opening it and copying the messages from the source folder into it.

As noted by Sharkfin, below:

NO! Not a big D'oh! for me. I can't copy whole folders from one mailbox to another, so there! I can only copy messages, so one would be required to manually recreate the folder structure, which isn't feasible for the OP.

Sorry if I got a bit carried away there!

And, yes, you are exactly right -- this is not really an option. But even if I went that route, I would have to research how to move that Archive Mailbox out of the current location onto a new drive, where it can sit, but be available when I do have to go back in there, and look something up.

The other thing that Thomas suggests is to do a backup of the current Pegasus directory, with all its messages and so forth. Then I guess that I would have to try out Stuart McLauhian's RestArch to restore them to another Pegasus-readable directory, then reattach them to Pegasus with the "Add New Mailbox to list..."

That also does not seem to efficient, and I am not sure that it would work too well.

So, should I be beginning to get the feeling that there is really no particularly good way to Archive Pegasus' Trays, Folders and messages (along with their attachments) at the present time?

Thanks again for your interest.

Hello Pegasorum:

I am using Pegasus 4.51 on Win Xp Sp3 (updated) in single-user mode. The Pegasus Data Folder is 2.13 GB, with 4,144 files, and resides on a separate disk from the C:\ drive (Windows and Program files only -- pretty much)

I would like to pare down several hundred Trays, folders and messages in my current "My Mailbox"  by selectively archiving them on a different drive, and be able to access them with Pegasus, but only when necessay.

Like many (I suspect) I have a structure something like:

My Maiilbox
Regular Pegasus Trays, Folders and Messages
...
...
...
Literacy Project  (Filing Tray)
  School Board A  (Filing Tray)
    School 1  (Tray)
Director (folder with a few dozen messages)
      Vice-Director (like the Director)
      Classes (Tray)
Class 1 ( several folders and many messages)
        PhysEd Class (Tray)
          Football (many folders and messages)
          Gymnastics (like Football).
        Class 3
Parents Council (tray with multiple trays and folders)

You get the idea...

I need to move some, but not all, of those Trays and etc. to an archive folder on a different drive.

I have found posts that do deal with Archiving, something like the following from Thomas R. Stephenson at

  http://community.pmail.com/forums/post/2501.aspx

What he describes seems to be two main methods of Archiving Pegasus Mail.

Method One involves creating Trays, (and Trays, and Trays), moving folders to their appropriate Archive Tray), then bit-by-bit deleting the now-empty trays in the current "My Mailbox". Since Pegasus can only move folders, you have to create the layers of trays down to a set of folders, move each folder into its new Tray, go up one level, create a Tray, move folders one-by-one, etc.

With many scores of trays, folders, messages (and many of those have file attachments) this would take, it seems to me, a very long time.

My understanding of the other method that he mentions would be that I  use Explorer, or a backup program, to copy the Pegasus folder, with all its messages, to a new drive. Then I would use  Stuart McLauhian's RestArch to restore them to another Pegasus-readable directory, then reattach them to Pegasus with the "Add New Mailbox to list..." function.

The problem with that method is that I would now have two Pegasus Mailboxes (My Mailbox and My Archive)  Trays, with much of the same stuff in both of them. Now, each time that Pegasus Opens or Closes, it has to do its cleaning-up or whatever, effectively doubling its work, and leading to even more possibilities of error and file corru[tion. Or am I confused?

What I actually need is a slimmed down set of "My Mailbox" Folders, and a second set of "Archive" folders. The "Archive"  could contain all those folders now in "My Mailbox". But they would remain static and would currently be unattached to Pegasus. However, they would be available so that I could access those Archives on occasion, but only when needed.

Any assistance or clarification would be much appreciated!

It might be possible to hack around with your hierarch.pm file to do something but I wouldn't recommend it without lots of practice on a spare installation of Pegasus...

Thanks for the suggestion, Sharkfin, but that does not sound too hopeful.

So it seems to me that some kind of Backup/Archive feature is needed.

I guess that I had better head over to the Pegasus Mail Suggestions, and add it in over there.

Well, I originally started writing a post about recreating the folder structure within a folder mounted as a mailbox. But manually recreating all the folders is not going to happen, so the best I could come up with was copying a large section of the hierarch file and editing it so that the new mailbox appeared to have an exact copy of the folders/trays in the mailbox. However, when I looked briefly at my hierarch and attempted to work out some instructions, I realised that I couldn't be sure that any of it would work, so I gave up and put the lame post that you see above.

But here I am a day later and perhaps my brain is working properly tonight because I can see that you don't have to manually recreate all the trays and folders, you just select them all and copy them across. Great big D'oh! for me.

EDIT:

NO! Not a big D'oh! for me. I can't copy whole folders from one mailbox to another, so there! I can only copy messages, so one would be required to manually recreate the folder structure, which isn't feasible for the OP.

Sorry if I got a bit carried away there!
