Filtering rule problem

It seems to have corrected itself.  The email in question seemed normal, though just a bit longer than usual.  It was nothing extraordinary, no attachments.  Guess the system just had a bellyache.[:)]

Something has happened to my Pegasus.  It acts as though it downloaded something it can't deal with.

When I try to bring up Pegasus (v4.41) it starts by telling me that my mailbox is locked.  This happens after a fresh reboot as well as after extended system usage.  I tell it to continue, the system finds all the Pegasus folders, and proceeds immediately to "Applying mail filtering rules".  I let it sit there for half an hour the first time, with no resolution.  My wife's account is alright, no problem.  I've rebooted several times and it keeps returning to "Applying...".

I've been to my ISP to check for a superlarge email, and find there is nothing pending.  Whatever it is downloaded to my system and was deleted from the ISP server.   There is nothing on the ISP to delete.

As soon as I post this I'll run a system scan with Malwarebytes, and probably Avast AV after that.

All help and suggestions will be appreciated.
