Multiple Identities

THANK YOU!  I kept trying, and failing, to create another "entity which can send email" with the identity dialog. After reading your post, I was able to create a new "sender" account via Tools, Internet Options.

I am new to Pegasus. I have five email identities, all with the same domain address. I have added them to the list in the <Tools<Identities... window. I have tried changing email identities by clicking the "Become" button. But, no matter which I choose the email is sent with the default address. What else do I need to do?

Each identity can be thought of as an alternative set of main Pegasus options. You can also have different internet options too.

If you just want to check mail from different accounts, you don't need to use identities - just set up the multiple mail accounts in Internet Options.

If you change to another identity then open the options, you can change your outgoing e-mail address. Go back to another identity and you'll see that the option you just changed is still as it was. Each identity is separate.

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks Sharkfin!

The different identities are for outgoing only (separate for business, personal, social, etc.).

All email identities come in together and are sorted with filters. So, can you tell me the steps to take to set up the alternative identities for outgoing mail. Sorry, I'm a real beginner here.

 Michael,

I suspect that the problem might be that, despite using different identities, you still send / receive with the same basic SMTP and POP3 settings?

Just to add to Sharkfin's comment.

Each identity has a whole set of settings such as POP3, SMTP, Signature, displayed Name, etc. etc., basically everything you can find under "Tools-> Options" and "Tools -> Internet Options", attached to it.

When creating a new identity, each identity needs be configured to reflect the specifics for that particular identity.

However, if you create a new identity, you will most likely have already one <default> identity configured and when hitting "Identities - > Add ..", the new Identity will be based on the <default> (or whatever you have selected). This means, that all settings are copied over into the new identity and the new one is identical to the other (older) one! Sending, receiving with both identities will yield exactly the same results unless you have re-configured / adjusted one identity.

Assuming the above is true then select (become) the new identity and configure it to reflect the new settings e.g. "business". To change how the message is being received/sent go to e.g. "Tools -> Internet option ", e.g. change the email you want to use for that identity and most importantly add (create!) new POP3 and SMTP configurations and attach them to that identity (e.g. under the "Receiving (POP3)" tab, select "Add"  then "New" ...). As all identities so far read from the same POP3 and SMTP configuration, just editing the existing one may effect the other identities as well! I always create a complete set (pop3 and smtp) for each identity.

Change all the other settings (e.g. under Tools ->Options) to reflect that particular profile. You have to repeat this process for all identities.

Hope this was of some help.

Cheers

Thomas

Thomas...

I've been away....work gets in the way of getting important things done. Thank you for your email.

I finally got a chance to try things out this morning. It didn't work. I went to: Tools>Internet Mail Options>Sending (SMTP)>Add

Under "SMTP definitions for sending mail," I added my other four addresses (they are different names at the same @ address).

I then clicked on "New" and filled in under "General" the same info as the default, but changing the "Enter a name for this definition" to the new address. Next I went to the "Security" tab. I entered the "Login to the SMTP server using the following details:" with the new Username and Password (same password for all five names). I did this for each of the four new addresses.

I am not clear on what to do in: Tools>Options.

I did not make any additions to POP3. The default brings in all mail, no matter which address.

Any ideas about what I'm doing wrong.

Regards,

Michael

You need to create identities for each address you want to use and then become each identity and then use Tools | Internet options | General to enter the e-mail address and  Tools | Internet options | (Sending) SMTP to select the SMTP server.

Now when you send the mail as a specific identity it will use the correct e-mail address and server.
