Ok, I finally discovered that the attachment control (paperclip icon) on the left in the message viewer does not have the same functionality as the control (paperclip icon) on the right side of the viewer; the one on the right opens an attachment viewer in a separate window and it includes tabs and buttons beyond those presented by the control on the left.  This isn't really orthogonal - why are there two controls?  Anyway, I can now preview attachments by using the other control and the previously mentioned buttons, together with the 'raw mode' which I couldn't find earlier, are presented. Thanks for the replies.

Version 4.52 on Win2k Server, Netware Client 4.91, NW5.1 /eDirectory:

When selecting the attachment tree view in the message viewer window, I am able to view

HTML attachments because I explicitly set up the attachment-type properties in the

options=>incoming mail=>content viewers page, but i cannot view 'Plain text' type

attachments despite efforts to define viewers for type 'Text', 'Plain text' , 'Plain-text' and other

variations. With or without a definition clicking on the 'open with application' button fails silently.

You don't need any path for notepad as on all win3.1 through XP notepad is on the search path so your viewer.pm would not work on and XP client. Just notepad.exe with no path would. I don't know where notepad is located on Vista or Win7 but I'd bet it is on the  path by default.

However plain text would automatically be viewed in the WinPMail reader by default and would not require any viewer.pm entry for that file type.

Plain text attachments are viewable in the attachment view on my system.  These are displayed by the built-in TER so no other program is required.

So far, no email that doesn't place attachments inline has viewable attachments in my PMAIL installation;

 Let's walk before we try to run' you are trying to display something that is NOT typed as a test message but RFC 822.  Send yourself a small text file using a common file name format of test.txt and see if this is properly displayed in the attachment view.

The following message which included a small ascii text file 'test.txt' as an attachment was sent using 'pine'. I restored VIEWER.PM to its original version. PMail invoked 'notepad.exe' to display the contents of the attachment (I verified that there is no entry for 'notepad.exe' in VIEWER.PM).

Other than the fact that this test message has no From: or Subject: lines, it displays just fine on my machine, and the attachment when double clicked opens in Notepad. I have no file definition type for Txt.

If you click on the actual name then it opens the attachment in the application associated by windows with that file type.  You should though be displaying the actual test.txt file in the attachment preview. That said, what do you have set for Tools | Options | Message reader "Turn off attachment preview by default in the attachment view" 

Normally, when you use the attachments page of the message reader, Pegasus Mail will try to offer a preview of the data in each attachment as you click it. This behaviour can be turned off by clicking the No preview button in the attachment view, or if you would prefer the behaviour to be suppressed by default, by checking this button. Note that this control only alters the initial state of attachment preview - you can still turn it on on a message-by-message basisby clicking the Preview button in the attachment view.

I cannot find either a 'Preview' or a 'No Preview' button and at no time has PMail offered an attachment preview in the attachment view. I also could not find reference to an attachment preview in the help facility. If it is of any use I could post URLs to screen capture images of the various views

FWIW, PMail is installed as a shared application on a Netware volume, not on any client's local mass storage.
