Newbie question

Hi all.

I  work on installing a tiny server for my family. I got a piece of second hand hardware including a windows 2003 server license for cheap and to lower research time to get the right applications together, i decided to use an "all-in" package and XAMPP was the my choice.

Everything works fine so far, apache & mysql  are working well, so i tried to set up the mail-server mercury that was also included in XAMPP.

It was not easy for a newbie like me to figure out what all this modules are used for, but finally i managed to get mercury fetching my emails from the domain-account hosted by my isp (using the pop3-client). I also managed to make mercury send emails via the build-in "send email"-function (using the smtp-relay-client). I got the imap-server-module running and i am able to get my mails to my email-clients (outlook). But even after 2 days of trying hard i did not get the smtp-server-module to work. XAMPP has a build-in port-checker and port 25 is always marked as free although the smtp-server-module is running. Also when the smtp-server-module is running, the pop3-client and the smtp-relay-client-modules are not working (not polling).

Maybe i am wrong but i thought the smtp-server-module is the one that receives outgoing emails from my email-clients and queues the messages for transport by the smtp-relay-client?! After all i am frustrated right now and need some help. Can anybody please advice?

The XAMPP installation of Mercury is often not correctly configured, you can find a lot of threads about it here. Please post your mercury.ini file if you want us to try to see what could be the problem.

Anyway, if the MercuryS console window shows that the module is running, then it presumably is. Make sure that the Windows firewall isn't blocking any mail ports, and check that there isn't any real-time antivirus program that interferes with mail transport or the Mercury directories. If you are running Mercury 4.7x make sure that the MercuryX module is disabled, there is a serious bug in it that can put other modules offline.
