cannot open messages
UPDATE:  problem solved--the messages were open, but were in hyperspace.  The pale blue banner made me try expanding the Pegasus window to full-screen (24" monitor--usually I have it set to take up about 1/2 the width and 2/3 the height), and there was the open message, far to the right.
The easiest way to fix such an issue is to use the Window menu's Tile or Cascade entries which should move such windows back into view. For other windows it might be required to modify the file STATE.PMJ, see this thread for another sample.

All of a sudden I am unable to open messages. When I double click the listing in the file the message does not open. Likewise if I highlight the message entry and then click the open button the message does not open. With both of the above actions the only thing that happens is the "read/unread" flag gets set to read.  If I click reply then the message appears as it normally does with greater than symbols before each row. Likewise I can click forward and the message appears normally.  The only problem is when I attempt to actually open the message. Any ideas?

I recently installed the latest update 4.52 but it was working fine immediately after the update.

I am using Windows NT. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Ed

I'd hoped someone more knowledgeable than me would reply but since this is not the case, here's a thought I have. Perhaps it is an as yet uncovered 4.52 issue with Windows NT. Since you're not using Windows 7, you don't need 4.52, so why not downgrade to 4.51 and see what happens?

Cheers!
Steffan

I meant to reply but never got round to it. Not that I'm any more knowledgeable than Steffan, but different eyes see different things.

One of the effects of the changes within 4.52, which made it compatible with Windows 7, was that support for Win 98 was dropped. As Windows NT is of the same vintage, I suspect that there is indeed a link there.

From the 4.52 release notice: "Note: The move to Visual Studio 2008 has resulted in a program that can no longer be run on Windows 9x systems (Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows ME). This is not by our design - it is a Microsoft-enforced limitation of the new compiler. We are working on finding a way to support Windows 9x systems for a little longer, but realistically, the days of Windows 9x support are now seriously numbered - it is likely that there will not be more than one or two more releases of Pegasus Mail at most that will still support these old operating systems, and the next major release of the program almost certainly will not be able to run on anything earlier than Windows 2000."

Downgrade to 4.51 and see what happens. To downgrade you should just be able to install the old version over the new version. Always back up first, that way you can deal with a clean install if necessary.

You're talking about opening messages in a reader window, don't you? Did you try preview mode (just for testing if you don't like it)?

The same thing has just happened to me.  If I double click the message or highlight it and click Open, nothing happens (except that the blue banner across the top of the New Mail folder fades to the not-active color).  I'm using Pegasus 4.51 with Windows XP, SP-3.  I've used Pegasus for years, and this installation has been flawless since the computer was new last October.  The last message I opened was a suspicious "e-postcard," but it looked fishy so I didn't take the link it offered and deleted it.  After that, I couldn't open messages (either new ones or ones previously opened).  I can see them in the preview mode, or if I reply.  I deleted Pegasus and reinstalled it (but not until I recopied my files so it would find my settings and my thousands of old emails).  No change.

So, I'm hoping somebody knows what's happened and how to fix it.  I haven't tried Pegasus yet on my two other computers, but I suspect they'll be okay.  Help!

UPDATE:  problem solved--the messages were open, but were in hyperspace.  The pale blue banner made me try expanding the Pegasus window to full-screen (24" monitor--usually I have it set to take up about 1/2 the width and 2/3 the height), and there was the open message, far to the right.  Not clear how this happened--the suspicious e-postcard mentioned above seems to have left a bad cookie on my computer, which I deleted, but I don't see how it could have made my Pegasus messages move off-window.
