Betreft: System freeze/crash when sending email with attachments.

Well, I don't see a convincing reason for your problems with this message, it displays without any issues, and I don't see the (programmatic) link to sending attachments either. I know this is an annoying task, but can you still duplicate this behaviour? Does this message have to stay at a certain position? Do you use preview mode? Do you usually do a POP3 before triggering SMTP delivery? Do you have remote image auto-download (for HTML messages) enabled? Would setting Load Windows Internet services ... to Always (on Tools => Options => Advanced settings) make a difference? Although it might look a little bit over-investigative there must be a reason for this which might cause more weird future issues (one of them might be described in this thread), hence my request ...

Hi,

I am using pmail 4.52 on Windows 7 x64 and it has started freezing the whole system when I try to send emails with attachments (so I have no choice each time but to hit reset and wait a few hours for the RAID array to verify). Emails without attachments (including RTF) work fine.

It started a few days ago - someone emailed me a corrupt word doc to fix and email back. When I tried to email it back the system froze and since then every time I try to send any attachment it freezes. Since the whole system freezes, there are no error logs to look at. Looking at the smtp server logs, pmail issues EHLO, MAIL FROM, RCPT TO and even DATA and then is not heard from again.

I ran the 4.52 installer again and chose upgrade in case it needed to replace some system files, that didn't work. I made sure there were no corrupted queued messages anywhere (*.pmw or *.pmx), but without any errors to look at, I don't know what my next step is. I've been using pmail for about 15 years, so my mailbox is a bit bloated, but apart from this is had previously been working perfectly. This is my pmail info in case it helps:
WinPMail version: Version 4.52 (Win32), Jan 13 2010
Language resources: Standard UK English resource set
Extension Manager version: 1.13
Operating mode: Standalone
User name and ID: Single-user mode, 0
Windows version: 6.1
Windows flag word: 0
WINPMAIL.EXE directory: C:\PMAIL
Home mailbox location: C:\PMAIL\MAILBOX
New mailbox location: C:\PMAIL\MAIL
TMP environment variable: C:\Users\Misha\AppData\Local\Temp
TEMP environment variable: C:\Users\Misha\AppData\Local\Temp
LAN-based SMTP support: N, N, N
NetWare MHS support: N, N, N
Built-in TCP/IP support: Enabled
  - WINSOCK version: WinSock 2.0
  - WINSOCK path: C:\Windows\system32\WSOCK32.DLL
Commandline:
Active -Z options: 32768
PMR variable: (None)
PML variable: (None)
MAI variable: (None)
NB variable: (None)
Autofiltering folders: 0 (0 active, 0 inactive)
Last new mail count: 304

Can anyone help me? Please? At the moment I am using a webmail account to send attachments, it's quite annoying!

Thank you!

Misha.

Hello Misha,

Move all of the *.CNM files out of the new mail directory and try again.
If this works you can put them back one at a time.

Hello <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica; ">Misha,</span> <div>Move all of the *.CNM files out of the new mail directory and try again. </div><div>If this works you can put them back one at a time. </div>

You sir, are a genius. I would never have thought of that - whenever I've had corrupt cnm files in the past they've crashed pmail on load (not the whole system when sending).

I knew the time it had first happened so it was between 3 emails - one of them was a spam email that had never actually shown up in my inbox. Removed it and working perfectly again.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!

P.S. Am happy to keep the faulty email if anyone wants a look at it...

Yes, please (zipped CNM-file preferred) to idw.doc [at] t-online.de.
