Pegasus suddenly asks for username

Hello everybody,

I just wanted to say thank you very much for all your help! A friend of mine with the help of the posts and emails from another user resolved the problem (don't ask me what he did, I gave up and just let him do it).

Hi,

Trying to find a solution for this problem: http://community.pmail.com/forums/thread/23249.aspx (sorry, it's in German), I moved the two biggest PMM-files, including the corresponding PMI-files. After moving them back, I can't start Pegasus Mail anymore. I get asked for my Pegasus Mail username, which it usually never does and frankly, I don't know what the username is supposed to be.

Thanks for your help!

You could try running pconfig.exe. More information about this can be found on http://www.vandenbogaerde.net/pegasusmail/pf_pmfiles.html. Hope this helps.

Cheers!

Thanks, Steffan, but the URL links to a page that no longer exists. I did run pconfig.exe In "Standalone Configuration" it says: C:\Programme\PMAIL\MAIL\~8, which I guess should be fine? The folder containing the mail-files is located here: C:\Programme\PMAIL\MAIL\ADMIN

The other thing is, I guess, I should have a file named pmail.usr somewhere to make this work, but I did a search and it does not exist. It also looks as if it had already not existed prior to my problem with accessing Pegasus Mail?

Ok, I've been doing some more reading and if I understand it right, PMAIL.USR only exists if you have more than one user (Source: http://community.pmail.com/forums/thread/17887.aspx)? Since I don't have one more user, that should explain it?

(Ok, frankly, I don't care if this file exists or not, I just need Pegasus to be working again asap, so I can access some sent emails.)

The page exists all right, just make sure you copy the entire link, including the l in html.

Ok, sorry, it does work. I must have left out a part of the URL.

If you are running Windows Vista or Windows 7, you should install Pmail in c:\pmail, for example, and by no means in (the equivalent of) c:\program files.

Pmail.usr is only created when installing Pmail in multi-user mode.

Ok, I'm still clueless after reading the list with the various Pegasus file types...

Okay, and have you checked that Pmail is in fact installed in C:\Programme\PMAIL\MAIL\~8,

and that the mail-files are located in C:\Programme\PMAIL\MAIL\ADMIN? The point of running pconfig.exe is not to find out where the files are located, but to tell Pegagus where the files are located. Pegasus then stores this information in pmail.cfg.

If you ask where Pegasus is installed, I assume you mean where the winpm-32.exe is located? The path is C:\Programme\PMAIL\Programs and the path for mail folder is C:\Programme\PMAIL\MAIL\ADMIN

Is that more clear now? Sorry, I'm pretty confused myself...

Yes, it's clear now. Personally, I would try renaming pmail.cfg or moving it to a backup location, so that Pmail will run the installation routine. But perhaps there other, more practical options. Hope someone more expert than me will chime in. Good luck!

accessing Pegasus Mail?

It depends.  If you installed using a real old version single user than you may not have a pmail.usr originally but as soon as you moved to v4.x it was created.  This file should be in the root of the mail directory structure or in your case  C:\Programme\PMAIL\MAIL\pmail.usr.  If it does not exist you will get the error asking for the username.  The pmail.usr file look like this.

; PMAIL.USR Pegasus Mail user database.
A;Admin;Mail Administrator

You can cut and paste this into a file using Notepad and save it as C:\Programme\PMAIL\MAIL\pmail.usr.

I don't think the file is required when running Pegasus in single-user mode, which is what I'm doing at home (my current system configuration is about one year old tops but probably even younger) and I don't have the pmail.usr file. I do have it at work, though,  where I'm running Pegasus in multi-user mode.

Cheers!

If you started out with the old c:\pmail\mail single-user structure and always just upgraded from that version, then no you probably do not need the pmail.usr file.

If you installed new instead of upgrading and have the new single-user c:\pmail\mail\admin structure then yes you do need this file.
