Pegasus Mail downloading old emails time by time

Hi jss1941 thanks

Damn you are 100% right too. I have vista on my laptop and frequently do hibernate my laptop. Yes the culprit is caught .. it's hibernating vista. I practically implemented it.

Thanks. I had a great experience with this topic

Hi folks i'm using pegasus mail v 4.5 and time by time my whole messages on my webmail gets downloaded i.e. it downloads the mails that already have been downloaded

here is my current settings

Tools -> Internet Options -> Receiving (POP3) -> Edit-> Download Controls-> In Message download Controls.->Download only unread mail(i.e new since the last connection) is checked
and in Default action for mesages still present after filtering-> Leave on server, is selected

Yet,.. time by time it downloads whole mail present on my webmails inbox.

Is it due to mail server or it's the fault of pegasus mail ?? (qmail is my current mail server)

Thanks and all helpful suggestions are most welcome

You are right to query whether the problem is the server. My understanding is that some server software does not mark downloaded but undeleted mail as read. Whether this is by design, error or configuration, I do not know. I also do not know whether qmail is likely to be the issue.

If you can't change the server software or settings, perhaps you could get all mail copied to another account and you can then delete the mail as you download it, knowing that all the messages are available on your secondary account? This may or may not be useful depending on how you work and what you need to do. Just a thought.

Hi sharkfin

Thankyou for your opinion.
but let me rephrase "It's time by time Not always"

so it's really annoying if it had downloaded the old email always i would have thought it might be my mail server.

but today it's okay downloads only new mail.. And  after a few days it starts again downloading all emails.

It's really giving me headache.

thanks

kalu

Alternatively, you could set Pmail to delete mail once the server once it has been successfully retrieved. However, if you prefer to leave the mail on the server, you could consider using IMAP. You said your current mail server is qmail. I take it you mean gmail? If you do, you're in luck because gmail supports the IMAP protocol.

Cheers!

I believe that Pegasus keeps a record of what it has downloaded so that it knows which messages to skip next time. I don't know which file this history is stored in but here are a few thoughts...

1) Could you somehow be causing this "memory" to be wiped or reset? Or perhaps the file is read-only?

2) Are you using two separate versions of Pegasus (maybe one on a laptop and another on a desktop) which could have different records of what has been downloaded?

3) I wonder whether perhaps Pegasus ties the record of what has been downloaded to a single specific server. If your ISP uses some kind of server farm with load balancing, perhaps Pegasus is recognising that it's actually talking to a different server at the same DNS/IP address and therefore uses a different list of previously-downloaded files?

I guess we'd need someone from the Beta team or perhaps Mr Harris himself to answer that last one.

The most common reason for messages being downloaded multiple times is that they haven't been marked as read on the server, typically due to that the POP3 session didn't complete normally. Try examining qmail's log files and see if there are any POP3 sessions that have terminated with errors.

Thanks for your input.

Hibernating a Vista or Windows7 system seems to cause reloading already-read messages.  Not quite sure why, but it happens to me frequently, even though "download only unread messages" is set.  Perhaps one of the developers/testers can weigh in on this.
