Deleted Mail

Thomas, sorry to be so long getting back to this.  I've been out of commission for a bit.

I've got some questions regarding the procedure you set out.

Step 1.  My Home Mailbox is shown as C:/PMAIL/MAIL/kwb

Step 2.  I found three HIERARCH.PM files.

The first is located C:/PMAIL/MAIL/HIERARCH.pm  (size=28.5 Kb)

The second:  C:/PMAIL/MAIL/JOAN/HIERARCH.pm  (size=6.03 Kb)

The third:  C:/PMAIL/MAIL/KWB/HIERARCH.pm  (size=26.6 Kb

Which of those three do I want to rename?  My guess would be the first (size 28.5Kb).

Step 3.  Running WinPMail will re-create whichever I renamed.  Will it in any way disturb the others?  Will all my stored email be safe?  There are some emails which I cannot afford to destroy.

I have my system backed up, and will do an incremental backup before the above process, but it would be so much easier not to have to re-build my system.

Thanks for your help and attention.

I'm having a problem with deleted mail.  I'm using Pegasus 4.41 on a Win 2000 Pro system.

I have both mail accounts, mine and my wife's, set to preserve deleted mail until Pegasus is closed.  So, I can delete mail, and it is moved to the Deleted Mail folder.  It remains there until I close Pegasus.  This works well unless I change users.  If I delete mail, and then change users to my wife's account, the deleted mail in my own account disappears, as though I have closed Pegasus.  When I switch back to my account all deleted mail is gone, and the Deleted Mail folder is gone.  It acts just as though I had closed Pegasus, when, in fact, all I did was change users, and then change back to the original user.

Is this the way it is supposed to work?

This might be one of the reasons why the Change user feature has been removed in current versions of Pegasus Mail: Don't expect this to get fixed in future versions even if it can be confirmed by other users as well.

If you haven't already tried this, try: Go to 'Tools' > 'options' >  'advanced settings.' (It's the second choice) Check "save deleted messages between sessions"  It works for me to keep all messages in all folders until I manually delete them.

Good Luck,

Robert

I think the problem is going deeper than I had at first realized.  In addition to what I have stated above, I simply cannot make Pegasus save my wife's deleted messages.  It will save mine with no problem, until I close Pegasus, but not my wife's.

Using my wife's account, I can delete a message, and go immediately to the drop down menu of Pegasus files, and am unable to find the "Deleted Messages" file.  Pegasus simply is not saving her deleted messages, either until closing or between sessions.

As nearly as I can tell I have set my wife's preferences the same as my own.  Therefore I would expect our two accounts to act in the same manner.  I cannot understand the difference.  I need some guidance on this one.

Maybe she is but you do not see the folder because the hierarch.pm is screwed up.

Try  the following procedure.  This has worked for several others to restore the functionality of the  message folders:

1.  Use Help | About Pegasus Mail | Info to determine your mail directory.  Exit Pegasus mail.

2.  Rename the file HIERARCH.PM in your HOME mail directory to HIERARCH.SAV.

3.  Run WinPMail.  Your HIERARCH.PM will be re-created and should start working correctly.

Note:  This will delete any tray structure you have created and it will have to be recreated.  The process will not affect any
mail of mail folders you have, it only affects the display of the folders.
