Problems receiving from Hotmail

Since I get Hotmail all the time to my domains I do not see a problem here.  I also quickly went through the MercuryS logs and did not see any rejections of Hotmail connections.  FWIW, they all used the proper <> around the RCPT TO address. FWIW, if MercuryS was rejecting for the lack of the <> around the address then you should see it in the logs.  If you do not see any rejections then the MS comment is spurious.

Also, I went through two months of mail in the MercuryS log looking for hotmail.com and found that most of the connections using this host name did not have an IP address associated with MS (Hotmail, MSN)  at all and were blacklisted IP addresses.

I am having problems receiving from Hotmail.

If I watch the logs I can see the microsoft server contact me when I send mail from Hotmail->bishopsstortford.org, but there is no sign that the microsoft server contacts me when I send mail from hotmail->bishopsstortfordtc.gov.uk.

 Any ideas.  This is completely baffling and something of a disaster.

As far as I can see there are no DNS problems with the domain, and the IP address isn't blacklisted on any public list.

If you can't even see a connection attempt in the MercuryS log it's not likely to be a Mercury problem, but to be extra sure you should verify that the local domains section in Mercury core configuration has this domain listed (both bishopsstortfordtc.gov.uk and mail.bishopsstortfordtc.gov.uk should be in the list). Please post that part of mercury.ini if you want us to check it.

To be really sure about the SMTP part you can temporarily switch on session logging in MercuryS while doing another test.

If there still is no sign of any connection attempt from Hotmail there is very little to do about it from your end. If so error notifications or logs from Hotmail is the next place to look for clues.

Just a thought, is it possible that MS objects to the same ip address for two host names?  No one else does so far as I can tell.

No, it's not likely that Hotmail objects to the same IP address being used for several domains, it's very common with mail servers handling multiple domains.

Even though it's not going to help with the present problem, you should preferably add these lines to local domains:

bishopsstortfordtc: mail.bishopsstortfordtc.gov.uk

bishopsstortfordtc: mail.bishopsstortford.org

It can be better to just have the domain name in myname in the General section rather than the host name, as it's used in some sender addresses in Mercury.

I made the changes.  The connection is now intermittant, about 1 in 3 get through.  I doubt this is connected to the changes though.

 This must surely be a MS problem.

How are you sending the hotmail messages?  Via the web interface or from a client?

Some thoughts - not fixes, just ideas for random information gathering (my logic in such cases is that the more data I have the better):

  • Have you tried sending from different Hotmail accounts, or on different machines / ISPs?
  • Try changing the MX priorities (with one MX it shouldn't make any difference, but then the problem shouldn't be happening)
  • Do you have an ISP (or other) that will act as secondary MX, which you can then retrieve from?

I have tried from differnt hotmail accounts.  The problem is actually intermittant, you can send 10 mails in quick succession from the same account and 5 get through & the other 5 dont.

We have only one mailserver so I cant see how mx priorities make a difference?

No we dont have a secondary server (working on it)

Microsoft say its because we have a cisco router with the smtp fixup command enabled.  But we dont have a cisco router (its a netgear one).  And the problem occurs only with mail from microsoft.  So Microsoft are giving us the brush off.

 Anyone else any ideas?

Are you using any form of dnsbl?  Have you got restrictions in the NG router? (You have turned off pings, but I doubt that has anything to do with it.)

Based on our further investigation on the Query, we ran a few tests from our end

 

We tried to Telnet the MX Record for the domain bishopsstortfordtc.gov.uk on Port 25 and was able to connect sucessfully, when trying to send an email over the telnet session from Windows Live Hotmail it was OK, when trying to do an RCPT to: james.parker@bishopsstortfordtc.gov.uk it gave an Error saying "553 Invalid RFC821 mailbox specification." Based on this Error it's clear that to be complient to RFC I would recommend always to use <>, hence I tried to do RCPT to: <james.parker@bishopsstortfordtc.gov.uk> which went through fine. So Mailservers accepting (or sending) the recipient without angle brackets are not fully RFC compliant.I will assume then, at this stage, that almost all SMTP server, or relaying services will send email with the address in the <>'s. Hence this needs to be setup for the email Id's setup on the bishopsstortfordtc.gov.uk  domain for this issue to be resolved so that it starts receving emails from Hotmail.
