No need to sum up file sizes, the 2 GB limit applies to single files.

Please can someone help.  Whole folders have started disappearing from my mailbox.  I have been searching this forum and I see that others have had a similar problem.  However, nobody has described exactly what I am experiencing, and furthermore, I don’t understand the answers given as I don’t speak “computer”.  E.g. I haven’t the faintest idea what a “hierarch” is, or a PMM file, or a “home mailbox directory”, and I have never used trays.  <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

 

What appears to happen in my case is that I will be working on my emails, doing things I have done a million times before quite happily, when in the middle of an action (such as closing the drafts file, for example) Pegasus freezes.  I usually get the Microsoft  (?) box message that says something about having experienced an unexpected problem and needing to close.  More than once, though, I noticed that although the box and message looked the same it seemed to say something other Microsoft (or whatever it usually says) at the top.

 

After Pegasus has closed, I reopen it, and find that one or more of my folders has disappeared.  I have done searches and the subject headers for the messages appear,  but in the preview pane where I should be able to read the email, it says:

 

“This message contains binary or non-textual data that cannot be previewed within Pegasus Mail.

 

Filename:   (this is followed by one or more characters or symbols which are different in each message but seem to be completely random.)

 

“You can work with this file in the message reader’s Attachments page”.

 

 

I don’t understand what it means by “the message reader’s Attachments page”.  If I click on the attachment symbol for the preview pane, there is nothing there.  In the pane above, where the list of emails is displayed,  it shows the “From”; “Subject” Date/time” and “Size” information, but there is just a tiny square for each missing email in the column which lists which folder the emails are in.   Also, two new folders have mysteriously appeared in my folders list, with the same tiny box instead of a folder name.  The folders both contain a large number of emails from all over my system.  There are complete copies of emails which were not in the folders which disappeared,  and the same message about binary or non-textual data in emails which had disappeared.

 

I am desperately hoping that the fact that the subject headers etc are displaying means that the emails are still in my computer somewhere.  Am I right?  If so, how can I retrieve them?  And how can I stop this happening?  I noticed that a lot of people seem to have similar problems after re-installing anti-virus software,  but I haven’t done that, and my annual renewal of my AV (Kaspersky) was 2 months before this problem started.

 

Please could replies be in very simple language. 

With apologies for my lack of computer literacy, and the length of this message.

Hi

First of all, make a backup of your entire C:\Pmail folder by copying it into new folder (e.g. C:\mail-backup). If your messages are stored elsewhere, make a backup of that folder, too.

Next, open the original C:\Pmail folder and choose detail view then sort by file type. Create a folder on your desktop called CNM. Move all files ending .cnm from C:\Pmail to the CNM folder on the desktop.

Next, delete the file named heirarch.pm from C:\Pmail

Start Pegasus Mail.

Pegasus Mail should scan your pmail folder and find your mail folders and recreate them (this information is stored in the heirarch.pm file).

Assuming that works, close Pegasus Mail.

Open the CNM folder on your desktop and open the .cnm files using notepad. If the cnm file contains header information (To:, From: XMailer, Received by: etc) then copy it back to the C:\Pmail folder. If it is blank, or does not contain any data, leave it where it is.

When you open Pegasus Mail, the new mail folder should contain the messages you moved back (.cnm files are messages that appear in the new mail folder).

Let us know how you get on.

It sopunds as though the Pegasus Mail installation itself may have become corrupted.

cnm files are new mail that is in your new mail folder.

pmm files are the folders that contain your messages.

pmi files are the indexes of the pmm files (folders). The index contains the subject line, sender's address and size etc which is the detail displayed when Pegasus Mail opens the 'folder'

You can open any of the cnm's and pmm's using a text editor.

In the meantime, make sure your pmail backup is current and that you have a copy stored elsewhere on your drive or on a separate drive or CD/DVD. Install another copy of Pegasus Mail in a separate location and configure it. Copy the cnm, pmm and pmi files to the new location. Open Pegasus Mail and see if your mail messages are visible.

Following your advice I have discovered that I can get into messages using Notepad, so I will now see if I can find any of the "missing" emails.

&lt;P&gt;Thanks very much for your reply.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; I don&#039;t know how to get a total size of all the PMM files, there are 42 of them - too many to add up their individual sizes.&amp;nbsp; I may well have gone over the 2gb limit as I&amp;nbsp;rarely find time to go through and delete&amp;nbsp;emails that I no longer need, so I know some of the folders are very large.&lt;/P&gt; &lt;P&gt;Following your advice I have discovered that I can get into messages using Notepad, so I will now see if I can find&amp;nbsp;any of the &quot;missing&quot; emails.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/P&gt; &lt;P&gt;Many thanks again for your help.&lt;/P&gt; &lt;P mce_keep=&quot;true&quot;&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/P&gt;
