Thanks, more details would be great. I have a simple scenario, just 1 domain, but with off-site users that pop their mail from the isp mailbox (the e-mail domain is of course the same as the e-mail domain of the local network).
I don't quite follow you with the 'e-mail domain', but here's an example:

If you have a user joe with email address joe@yourdomain.com who wants to collect his email from joe70@ispmail.com.  Create an alias (in Configuration / Aliases) with joe@yourdomain.com as the alias and joe70@ispmail.com as the real address. Then any mail for joe will be sent on to his isp mailbox.

(Note that this is just a simple example and doesn't keep any of joe's mail on the Mercury server.)

how do i configure mercuty to send mail to external domain recipients. i.e. to non-local e-mail addresses using the same domain as the local users. There is no account for the non-local user in mercury so the messages bounce as "üser doesn't exist". This must be so otherwsie mail goes to the local folder and the external user (that is popping his ISP account directly) doesnt get mail. It is not an option to vpn onto the mercury box either. Exchange allow one to specify a default smtp server to use for non-local recipients.

Your help is appreciated

There is more than one way to do this and it will depend on the actual details of the setup.  When I was dealing with a company with several branch offices, I set up different domains - a.company.com, b.company.com etc.  Users were aliased at the main company.com server to be forwarded to the specifc sub domain.

That's the bare bones - come back if you want more details.

Thanks, more details would be great. I have a simple scenario, just 1 domain, but with off-site users that pop their mail from the isp mailbox (the e-mail domain is of course the same as the e-mail domain of the local network). Basically I need a rule that says "if user not found locally then use smtp.xxx.xxx to send the mail out to the non-local user"

Thanks again

This one is tough, a mail server cannot share a domain.  In order to do this you need to change the Mercury domain to something like local.domain.com and then alias every local user to this domain.  Now mail for non-local users will be sent to the server that has this registered in the DNS.

Would creating a "forward file" work to forward the mail for these users to their ISP mail address?

Thanks, I'll have to learn how to "alias" the users.
