Cnnecting to mail server

Glad it is all working now - every ISP has periods of outage when things don't work as they should for a while!

Glad it is all working now - every ISP has periods of outage when things don't work as they should for a while!

I have always used OE as the mail client on my home PC and have had no problems Windows XP SP3). As you know OE is no longer available on newre versions of Windows and I thought I would have a look at Windows Live Mail with a view to the future. I was not impressed by Live Mail and don't intend to use it.

I have installed Pegasus Mail but find that I cannot connect to my ISP's mail server. The account is set up in the same way as in OE, but Virgin Media does not recognise my user name and/or password. The following error message is received.

[*] Connection established to 62.254.26.193
>> 0065 +OK Gpop ready for requests from 62.254.26.97 11pf6519120wbj.30
<< 0023 USER stewartmccormick
>> 0015 +OK send PASS
<< 0014 PASS XXXXXXX
>> 0049 -ERR [AUTH] Username and password not accepted.

My password has been entered correctly and I have tried my user name with and without the @ntlworld.com.

Can anyone help?

Check Tools => Internet options => Receiving (POP 3) => [double-click POP 3 definition] => Security for additonal authentication options.

pop3.ntlworld.com

POP3 SSL

Enabled

POP3 port

995

POP3 authentication

Enabled (or 'Password' on Macs)

POP3 username

Full e-mail address, e.g., richard.branson@ntlworld.com

POP3 SPA (Secure Password Authentication)

The Virgin Media website tells me that the POP3 server name is pop3.virginmedia.com (not pop3.ntlworld.com), and this setting is what I use with OE. On looking further at the email help on the Virgin Media website, it appears that the problem is probably that they do not support Pegasus Mail.

No, this only means they don't provide support in cases like yours, it doesn't mean it won't work. Did you try Paul's suggestion? Maybe turning on Internet session logs can help: Go to Tools => Internet options => General and enable it at the bottom, please read the associated help after clicking the Help button for futher details.

I went to: Help / Email (cable or national) / 'Getting Started' tab then clicked on 'Email settings for addresses ending in ntlworld.com' to find the information.

I wouldn't expect every ISP to have help scripts for every email client.  But that doesn't mean that Virgin Media customers can't use Pegasus Mail to access their mail - there are several people on the mailing list who have no problems.

What are the settings that you are using?  what port number?

Paul

The settings are exactly as in your previous reply. They work perfectly in OE.

Edited to add:- Pegasus now seems to download email, with no change in my settings
