Pegasus Mail crashes when viewing a TIFF picture

The Adobe manual for Tiff V6 is here: http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/en/tiff/TIFFphotoshop.pdf   It seems to have warnings about differences that have been introduced. For Pegasus Mail, we need information from the vendor SubSystems on what version they support.

Hello,

 I noticed that Pegasus Mail crashes consistently when trying to view an attached TIFF file.

<edit> the crash window provides this info:

AppName: winpm-32.exe     AppVer: 4.5.2.0     ModName: ter32.dll

ModVer: 15.0.4.5     Offset: 000f910f </edit>

Does somebody have the same problem? If not, does PM rely on some system extension/function to display TIFF pictures?

Can't reproduce this behaviour. Sent myself a tif file and had no problems opening it by doubleclicking the attachment.

This is a known issue caused by the thirdparty TER reader/editor module with some TIFF files, there's currently no fix available, you should open such images with an external viewer, maybe adding an external viewer on Tools => Options => Content viewers could help.

Perhaps I should've added that the TIF file I sent myself was opened in IrfanView. I haven't had to add an external viewer in Pmail, as I have set Windows XP to associate TIF files with IrfanView.

What happens if opening the file in the attachment preview pane of the reader (but keep in mind that not all TIFF images cause a crash, I don't exactly know about the reason)?

All the TIFF files I receive come

from Macintosh partial screen captures, made by different people (I

don't know what software is used though) and, once saved on disk, can

properly be viewed in the Windows' picture preview. But each and every

of these TIFF files crash PM in the attachment pane.

It's even difficult to click them in order to save them on disc, because the picture displays automatically.

Defining

a content viewer for .TIF and .TIFF file didn't help, it seems that the

preview overrides this setting anyway. If somebody knows how to prevent

the attachment pane to display TIFF files, I'm highly interested :)

Steffan, no double-clicking required, if you open the attachment pane in a reader window it may display any attachments it can handle on the lower pane automatically after selecting them in the upper pane - unless you have disabled attachment preview via toolbar button.

  1. In preview mode you can easily switch to attachment view without displaying any contents at all.
  2. On a reader's attachment page there's a toolbar button allowing you to disable attachment preview.
  3. But you may as well just select the attachment to save with the right mouse button which will achieve the same result.

Isn't it any way to update the TER32 DLL?

The author's site (subsystems.com) lists the latest version as v18, but PM seems to use v15.0.4.5, which is 4 years old...

Well, until recently David Harris simply couldn't afford it until some generous donator helped out ... [;)] It'll be replaced in due course, but we haven't had a chance for testing it, yet.

However, I only made a few attempts to reproduce the problem, which is not a problem for me. I normally just use the Save & Edit attachment button.

I don't think so because in such a case it wouldn't cause crashes for other users if TER wouldn't open it automatically - I just tested and it was opened as expected: There must be something special on your system ...

There are different levels of Tiff file defined, and I strongly suspect that TER is not up to date on versions. I extracted the attachment and a number of programs I tried, opened it successfully. I tried Irfanview and Adobe Reader  as well as OpenOffice.

Does anyone have an idea what is special to this TIFF format? Could it be a Big Endian vs. Little Endian issue (according to Wikipedia)?
