Hanging when setting mailbox location to a network directory

"The only thing that does not work in Mercury/32 with Wine is the SSL/TLS and you can use STunnel for Linux to allow the MercuryC SMTP client to connect to a relay host and have the MercuryS, MercuryP and MercuryI servers support SSL connections."

Anyway, I've moved on from PMAIL and MERCURY to Thunderbird and Xeams. Thunderbird is really great. I recommend you try it if you haven't already. Xeams okish - closed source >:(

Enjoy.

I am experiencing a problem trying to change the mailbox location for PMAIL.

1. I set the mailbox location to '\\Vboxsvr\pmail\MAIL' and toggle 'Change now'.

2. PMAIL shuts down, MBXMAINT.EXE shows - appears to hang and about 15 seconds later dies, then pmail starts and hangs at 'Checking directories and disk space...'

I am a Linux user, but use Windows strictly for gaming (strictly because I hate Windows and will try not to use it as much as possible). I am a hardcore gamer and have hours-long sessions, so its important I have my mail server running when I boot into Windows to game.

I have installed and setup my mail server (MERCURY) on both my Linux and Windows partition; Linux partition being in a Windows virtual machine. I have mapped the virtual machine install log, relative config and queue directories to the Windows partition, without problem.

Like MERCURY, I've installed PMAIL into both partitions, set it up in Windows fine, but the virtual machine install appears to not like having the mailbox location map to a network path.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Thanks guys, so more for support forums....

Don't blame the forum.  I would have replied but you were not clear on what you were trying to do, you ask good questions and provide more detail and you get more answers.  This function just moves the HOME mail directory, it does not move the associated NEW mail directory.  In any case the program MBXMAINT_UI.exe that comes with Pegasus Mail might make this a bit easier.  In addition, there are a couple of thing that may cause this to fail if the drive is not already connected to your system via drive mapping.

If you want to move both your HOME and NEW mail directory to a different drive that is another process.

Ok. Forget I mentioned anything about this install of PMAIL being in a virtual machine.

I want to set my mailbox location to \\Vboxsvr\pmail\MAIL. This location is a network path, which is active and accessible (MERCURY is able to access it without problem).

In PMAIL options (Tools > Options > General settings > Mailbox location), I set my mailbox location to \\Vboxsvr\pmail\MAIL and then toggle "Change now". PMAIL restarts but then hangs on the splash screen, which I then need to force kill the process. When I start PMAIL again nothing has changed.

1.  I want to verify that you want to split the hOME mail directory from the NEW mail directory.

From the help:

"Your home mailbox is where all your mail folders , distribution lists , address books  and other Pegasus Mail related files except unread new mail are stored. By default, it is located in a special directory on the file server, but you can specify an alternative location for it using this option.

Important note: even if you move your home mailbox location, your new mail will continue to arrive in the default new mail directory: Pegasus Mail will also continue to store your PMAIL.INI settings file in that directory. This is important for the continued correct operation of the program and is neither an error nor an oversight. You cannot relocate your new mail folder using this option.

You may want to change your home mailbox location if you have limited space on the file server, if you are concerned about the privacy of your mail, or for other reasons. You can also have more than one mailbox and change between them using this dialog -you might want to do this if you received mail at your address for more than one person or organization."

If you want to change both the home and new mail directory you need to use pconfig.exe and change the home and new mail directory path and then manually move the mail in the current mail directory.

2.  I'm a bit confused about the UNC path specification.  It's usually \\server\share\path and I do not see that with this specification.

Hi! Thanks for your reply!

I don't want to change or create a new directory. I just want to map the my second install of PMAIL to directories on a network. PMAIL doesn't seem compatible with mapping to networks?

Please see this diagram: http://i54.tinypic.com/n2juo3.png

I can't use pconfig.exe, because its not compatible with Windows 7, so I edited pmail.CFG with a text editor.

Ok you do NOT want to use the Pegasus Mail move then to move the home mail directory.

> PMAIL doesn't seem compatible with mapping to networks?

Sure it is, I'm running Pegasus Mail with mailboxes on remote Netware, Linux and Windows servers.  No problem at all.  You just use pconfig.exe to change the home and new mail directory spec to the remote location.  Here my system info on this Pegasus Mail installation.  The program in this case is installed locally with a split home and new mail directory structure on a windows system.

BTW, on Linux I run both Pegasus Mail and Mercury and other Windows programs over Wine, works pretty well for me.

Pconfig.exe is compatible with Win7, it is not compatible with any Win64 systems since they removed the 16-bit support.  Pconfig.exe writes the directory specs to pmail.cfg.  Get a copy of DOSBox for running all your 16 bit applications in a 64 bit environment.  I use it on both Window and Linux to run 16 bit MSDOS type programs.  http://www.dosbox.com/
