Sender header

I checked old list messages and Mercury has been adding a Sender header since at least 2004. So if the on behalf text has started to appear recently it's probably because of some change in the mail client software.

There is no setting for including or not including the Sender header, but you could perhaps rename Maiser to ListServer or something similar if that would make more sense. Other than that it would probably be possible to create a daemon to remove Sender headers from list messages.

Customers can trigger a mailing on our server for their mailinglist, however it shows that it's being sent on behalf of our customer:

Maiser@ourdomain.com

[mailto:Maiser@ourdomain.com] On behalf of Customer

Previously this wasn't the case, so we know we the sender header can be suprressed for a mailinglist. However I can't find the options for this in te documentation (I'm probably using the wrong term).

Does anyone know how we can suppres the sender header for a mailing?

Just a little kick to see if anyone knows if the above question is possible.

There is a setting for anonymity under Distribution in mailing list settings. Mercury help says:

Anonymous mail support It is occasionally desirable to set up mailing lists that provide anonymity for people who send mail to them -- examples of this include suggestion boxes, and lists covering sensitive or dangerous subjects. Mercury lists support three levels of anonymity - none, where no attempt is made to hide the sender's identity; logged, where no indication of the sender's identity appears in mail sent out to the membership, but the sender's address is recorded in the Mercury log file; and total, where the sender's identity is neither shown in mail sent to the list nor in the Mercury log file.

That looks like it's the option I need to set. However, I can't find the option I need to set, and in which configuration, file for this behaviour.

Please note that I do not have the GUI available to me, I need to know how to configure this via editing the configuration files themselves.

It's advisable to use the GUI to change LISTS.MER to avoid getting syntax errors that can break list handling. However, if you for some reason can't do that you should add a line saying:

   Anonymous: Y

for "Anonymous but logged", or:

   Anonymous: T

for "Fully anonymous".

I just had a moment to test these settings and they have no effect on the "on behalf" tekst in the e-mail. The sender header is still in the sent e-mail.

Any ideas what else might cause this behaviour?

I tested with sending a message to a list first with "addresses unchanged", then with "anonymous but logged". In the first case the sender related headers in the distributed message were:

Return-path: <rolf@bulls.se>

From: Rolf Lindby <rolf@bulls.se>

Sender: Maiser@mail.test.local

In the second case (anonymous) they were:

Return-path: <testlist@mail.test.local>

From: Testlist

<testlist@mail.test.local>

Sender: Maiser@mail.test.local

So the "on behalf of" text is apparently not added by Mercury, and neither is the "mailto:" address.

I tested with sending a message to a list first with "addresses unchanged", then with "anonymous but logged". In the first case the sender related headers in the distributed message were:

Return-path: <rolf@bulls.se>

From: Rolf Lindby <rolf@bulls.se>

Sender: Maiser@mail.test.local

In the second case (anonymous) they were:

Return-path: <testlist@mail.test.local>

From: Testlist <testlist@mail.test.local>

Sender: Maiser@mail.test.local

So the "on behalf of" text is apparently not added by Mercury, and neither is the "mailto:" address.

/Rolf

I never said that the on behalf text is added by Mercury, the users mail client adds this (note that not all mail clients do this).

These mail clients only add this if there is a sender header present in the email, and this header is, as far as I can tell, added by Mercury. I want to disable the addition of this header as it is not the intended behaviour we want for these mailing lists.
