Pegasus Mail in Ubuntu Wine
Thanks for these hints. Pegasus is found at /userid/.wine/dosdevices/c:/pmail but I cannot find Pmail.usr in the Pmail\mail dir but it is in Pmail\mail\mail. What programme do I need to read the .usr file?
You aren't running into a problem with case sensitive paths and file names are you?

By the way, "dosdevices/c:" is the same as "drive_c"

I have just transferred my emails from my old Windows XP machine to a new laptop running Ubuntu 11.04. Pegasus Mail now asks for a username. As I've never entered one in Windows when using Pegasus, is there anyway of either finding the username OR best of all getting Pegasus Mail to stop asking for it? I cannot get wine to open pconfig.exe so cannot check the location

Thank you

Nick

Try the default Admin for the Id, as you probably set up the new install as multi-user

Thanks Martin. Tried nearly every variation possible. I think I need to get into pconfig.exe to make sure the setup is reading the right folders. As i can't get the pconfig to run in wine I'm a bit stuck.

The program pconfig.exe is 16 bit as as such does not work on Windows 64 or Linux/Wine.  Go to the package manager and load DOSBOX on the Ubuntu system and that will allow you to run these 16 bit MSDOS type programs.

Users of 64-bit Windows are having a similar issue which a tool called DOSBOX appears to help with, maybe you can give it a try as well.

Thanks to you both Thomas and idw. With dosbox I was able to verify that everything points to c:\Mail\Mail which means I'm still very stuck as to how to avoid the username request. Any suggestions?

1.    If PMail is actually is pointed to c:\mail\mail\~8

2.    and the user directories are subdirectories of c:\mail\mail

3.    and the username is in the pmail.usr file located in c:\mail\mail

4.    then this should work.

The basic structure of a new install though is

c:\pmail\programs            the Pegasus Mail program
c:\pmail\mail                     the PMail user file
c:\pmail\mail\admin          the default admin account
c:\pmail\mail\USER1        the user accounts
.
.
c:\pmail\mail\USERn

 1. I do not have c:\MAIL\MAIL\~8 that I can ascertain. Should I create this sub folder?
 2. Directories under mail\mail are Admin, IMC-3E9, Rmt files
 3. Pmail,usr is in mail\mail

Any help you can offer to guide me through?

Thanks

This is the entry in pconfig.exe for the HOME and MAIL directory paths and the ~8 is replaced by the username.  In this case the mail directory path for ADMIN HOME and NEW mail directories would be replaced by c:\mail\mail\admin.

> Directories under mail\mail are Admin, IMC-3E9, Rmt files

This means you have one user ADMIN. There other subdirectories are cache directories.

> Pmail,usr is in mail\mail

1.  Is there an entry for the user ADMIN?

2.  Can you verify that this is c:\mail\mail and not c:\pmail\mail?

3.  Does the pconfig.exe home and new mail directory spec end with a ~8 (or ~n) and match the actual path?

If your mail path is c:\pmail\mail\mail\admin you should enter c:\pmail\mail\mail\~8 in pconfig, if it's

c:\pmail\mail\admin

the "match" would be c:\pmail\mail\~8.

Thank you Michael

I changed the home mail to pmail\mail\mail\~8 but to no avail. I then I also switched the new mail setting to match that but also to no avail. I've now switched that back to  pmail\mail

All a bit of a mystery to me, so any other things that you think I should try, please do let me know.

Thanks

A couple of things need to be cleared up.

Under linux the actual physical location of the C: drive would be.

/home/userid/.wine/drive_c

 or

~/.wine/drive_c

There should then be a PMAIL directory there if you installed the Pegasus Mail using the installer, and then a MAIL directory under that.

in the PMAIL/MAIL directory there should be a PMAIL.USR file and you can cat PMAL.USR to see what it contains.

In my case the second line after the comment at the top has

A;Admin;Mail Administrator

The is also a directory ADMIN there, and that is where the mail folders are.

Using DOSBOX to look at the correct location.

dosbox

mount c ~/.wine/drive_c

c:

dir

That should show the same C: as you would get from the windows.

Long time ago, I created a windows program using cbuilder 5 the seems to do the same as the dos pconfig program from windows.

Hope that might help.

Read pmail.usr file with any plain text editor like Notepad.

I think you will continue to have problems until you have things into the proper default locations and with default paths like c:\pmail\mail for the pmail.usr and c:\pmail\mail\admin for the default username and you have the  program files in c:\pmail\programs along with the subdirs of it also. Have you actually run the installer of 4.62? Copy form another system will not work.

Thanks for this. Can I therefore copy the Mail sub directory of Mail's contents into Mail in order to get the directory tree back to what Pegasus recognizes?

Only part of it. *Do not* copy any files that contain any configuraton or settings or any  paths in them. Only copy the subdirs and only *.cnm files and *.pmr and *.pmi file pairs, *.pml files. Never copy any ,ini or .pnd or .pmc files and they contain old path information though you can view them in text editor to duplicate settings if necessary but enter all and any changes or settings via Tools, Options or Tools, Internet Options menues. Check each and every one of the menues becuase most users do not want the default settings the installer will have set.

http://www.vandenbogaerde.net/pegasusmail/pf_pmfiles.htm

will  show you what files are and what they do.

When setting up new machine and installer I prefer to first get  program running and downloading and sending mail and then after all is well to begin to restore the new mail messages and the messages folders and any distribution list files being sure to place them into the \mail\username subdir on the new system.

Copy from one machine to another no longer works and installer must be run and registry entries and use button that says System Mailer when you get to it also.

When done and all running save a copy of the display of Help, About, Info button for reference. I wish you had done that and showed us that for the old XP system as the very first step so we would have know for sure where your old important files were located and the directions of how and where to place them would have been much simpler.

Under normal conditions there is never any reason to run PCONFIG if both old and new installs were at default values and locations.

To change or set use Addresses on top toolbar and User management to add change or delete any User. Also make sure Admin and one or more others have administrative rights. Do not edit pmail.usr file with text editor except in extreme emergency, use only to view the file.

To all of you who have offered me advise from which I have learned a lot I have to say that in the end I zapped Pmail and reloaded it following exactly the original procedures. This time it works and has none of the duplicate looking directories. Bit like kicking the TV instead of calling the repairman.

Thanks for everything
