Pegmail crashes when viewing message

Uuups indeed! I had no idea.

Thanks for the info Jerry and Olaf.

And Thanks again for the help Michael.

<p>Uuups indeed! I had no idea.</p><p>Thanks for the info Jerry and Olaf. </p><p>And Thanks again for the help Michael. </p>

Pegmail crashes whenever I try to view certain messages. It also crashes when I try to view replies to those messages. However, if I turn off preview, I can select the messages and reply to them.

The replies I send don't cause a crash. There are no attachments, but they are in html format. I have the latest version of Pegasus Mail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There's a special "how to" post at the top of this forum dealing with such issues, please follow its instructions. And since you didn't tell us which version you regard as the latest one (with v4.63 just released this week) another update might very well be all that is required.

I read the how to and did everything suggested with the exception of posting the info from the "help:about". That's pasted below.

I regard the latest version as the latest release at the time of the post.

Thanks for the help.

Well, the dump(s) you sent look a little bit confusing to me: The only meaningful code line it points to seems to suggest that this crash doesn't seem to be related to HTML processing, and it suggests that editing is involved instead of just opening a message. Would it be possible to forward a crashing sample message to beta-reports [at] pmail.gen.nz (preferably as CNM-file from the new mail directory or as attachment (not enclosure) to another message?

Hello Michael,

Yes, I've sent the message as an attachment along with the mini dump.

Thanks for trying to solve this problem. I really like this email client and it's been driving me nuts since it started crashing last week.

Btw, the problem started before I upgraded to version 4.63. I only upgraded after I started trying to find the problem. I had just recently (October 2011) upgraded to version 4.62.

It must be an option or feature that I've recently enabled. I just scrolled through all the emails I've received over the past year, and it crashed on 65 of them that I know it opened with no problems before.

Found it!

In Tools-Options-Incoming mail-Hyperlinks

I unchecked "Check for suspicious 'phishing' URLs in HTML messages".

It no longer crashes when reading those 70 messages.

I have absolutely no idea what causes this, I cannot duplicate it with the message you sent, and I don't even understand theoretically why this should be connected to checking URLs since the message you sent doesn't even contain a hyperlink, just unlinked email addresses and an unlinked URL. Aside from this just opening a message doesn't trigger any URL checks in IERenderer unless clicking a hyperlink and BearHtml only does such checks on moving the mouse pointer across a hyperlink (AFAIK). And finally the dump doesn't point to any code in BearHtml or IERenderer and running Pegasus Mail from within the Windows debugger doesn't show any abnormalities either. I'm completely at a loss ...

Do you have Pegasus Mail set to display the "fancy" version on Tools => Options => Message reader? If so, do you have IERenderer or BearHtml enabled (check IERenderer's button menu for the respective check mark on Use IERenderer)? The dump seems to indicate that you don't have "fancy view" enabled. BTW: Do you have Load Windows Internet Services ... set to Always on Tools => Options => Advanced settings (strongly recommended)?

As am I. As I was trying to track down the problem, I changed some options in order to keep it from trying to display the suspect emails in either the preview window or the reader until I specifically wanted to. After unchecking the phishing option and finding that it no longer crashed, I returned all those options to the previous state. It then started crashing again, although the phishing option was still unchecked.  I then tried various combinations of the options involved, and found it would crash with certain combinations.

No, I don't have the "fancy view" enabled, and it was not one of the options I was  toggling.

"Load Windows Internet Services"  was set to "on demand only", until I read your latest reply. I then set it to "always", and it started crashing again.

I don't think it's got anything to do with any of the options, this sounds like some kind of memory access issue depending on whatever accidentally modifies the memory layout: David Harris might have an idea after taking a look at the details ...

His first reply indicates some surprise about the code location of the crash: It's within the line wrap routine, so it might be worth to check whether disabling or changing the reader's line wrapping option might have an impact. And: What's your Right margin ... setting on Tools => Options => Message reader?
: What's your Right margin ... setting on Tools => Options => Message reader?
That seems to be it.

When it was crashing it was set to 2000, because I've been getting some ridiculously long links in messages from ebay.

I just shortened it to 100 and played around with the options as I had previously, and it seems to be okay now.

Please keep in mind that current RFC5322 SHOULD recommendation is not larger than 78 chars. Any inbound messages with more that 78 char per line are also in violation and should be changed by sender.

As noted earlier the default for Pegasus Mail in Editor is 72 chars and I set and suggest the ctrl+j reformat option setting be set at 78 chars for when messages are reformatted. That way when you view reformatted you see what is supposed to be the limit which on screen nicely and is much easier to read than long lines.

HTML works differently and is another subject and rules altogether for a different protocol than SMTP mail. Even latest versions of Outlook are careful to make sure all is encoded into lines of not greater that 78 chars.

Uuups ... that's more than the length a line in raw text is allowed to be in mails (about 1000 characters). Heed idw's advice.

For handling those long links mark them in Pegasus, open the context menue and choose opening the marked text as hyperlink (sorry ... don't know how it's exactly called in the english context menue).

bye   Olaf
