Hanging on POP download

Cool, thanks. I've tried the content control setting, and I'm still seeing the delays. I'll have a go at the log....

For what it's worth, I have found one other post with a problem similar to mine - it's titled "Pegasus has gotten incredibly slow in processing incoming emails" by Stan Lekach on 20 October 2011 (not sure how to directly link posts?)

My PMail 4.63 on XP hangs intermittently whenever it downloads emails off POP servers. The hanging is to the point where it doesn't even rebuild the window graphics if I alt-tab out and back into the programme.

Once the emails have downloaded fully, it runs perfectly smoothly. It is as if it didn't allow for "multi-tasking".

Anything I can do?

Ok - let me rephrase. Pegasus becomes REALLY slow. It does not crash or hang completely and permanently.

  •  All software is in their latest version.
  • The issue passes when email has been downloaded completely.
  • The MiniDump extension, as I understand it, provides only crash data, so will not help.
  •  I have searched and not yet found any suitable forum responses that would provide additional indication of how to address the issue.

There are several things missing we would need to know to try to reproduce your problem. A copy of Help, About and Info button display would help also as that answers several questions.

Do You have winsock loading set to Always (prefered) or is set to On demand?

Do you "show fancy" turned on? Are you set to download graphics automatically?

What is the speed of you connection and is it in good working order or intermittent?

Have you run with session log turned on once or twice only to see if any unusual connectivity problems or error messages or timeouts being shown?

Are you using any POP3 filtering rules to handle some messages on server?

Let us know some things about your normal set-up.  Poor connection speed? Slow server response time? Do you leave emails on the server? Do you have extensive filtering rules (POP or new mail)?  Is your computer heavily loaded when this occurs? Is it associated with a particularly large email?  Do you have anti-virus scanning messages as they are being downloaded?

Any of these issues may be a factor in what you describe.

{Edit - Jerry got in first!}

Paul, Jerry: Great, thanks for questions - apologies for my gruff response earlier. It just felt as if I had done at least part of my home work, and got hit over the head ;-). Here, the requested info:

  • Winsock is set to always.
  • I have about 12-15 new mail filtering rules active - all of these only use one criterion (from or subject). I do not use any server side filters. However, the lag occurs during download )(as the % changes)
  • Where fancy exists, it is displayed - preview is not active, and neither is auto-download of images
  • I am running XP Service Pack 3, with 1Gb of Ram, 1.6Ghz processor. Setup is fast and reliable with everything else. Connection is >200kb/s and highly reliable, corporate broadband.
  • This occurs only on POP download and IMAP sync and sometimes on SMTP upload.
  • Logs have shown nothing unusual / errors.
  • This happens with all my mail providers: GMail, Web.de, Webmail.co.za, GMX.de and corporate server
  • This has occurred both with Norton Antivirus and AVG (currently)

when you say "This has occurred both with Norton Antivirus and AVG (currently)" does that mean you use virscan extension or are  you using AVG 2012 in normal mofe or are you using the proxy mode now? I'm wondering what else might be checking mail between you and server you are downloading mail from. What size limit do you have set in Content Control and have you tried with 5000 set?

When you say you  tried Norton before are you certain it is actually fully removed and inactive? Reports have been that it is almost impossible to fully remove.. Is that the  AVG 2012 free you are using or a paid version. I'm using that, but not in proxy mode, and see no unusual delay dwonloading via POP3 with either of my mail providers one of which is Gmail with Spamhalter and Content Control turned on and do use Virscan extension but did have to modify virscan.fff and .ini after moving to Win7 systems and AVG 2012 free and use of the 64bit version since it differs from the 32bit exe name.

When you say have tried both Norton and AVG was that in normal mode or in the proxy mode currently? Do you use virscan extension and have both the .fff and  .ini been modified to use the 64bit execuable instead of the 32bit one?

What is your size set in Content Control? Have you tried reduced to 5000?

What else is between your machine and the mail servers? Is there any other firewall or email ports being checked by other software? You say no errors reported in session log file but where there any halts or lapses in the time entries beyond miliseconds?

I did a completely clean new Windows installation, and then copied my

Pegasus Mail across. That should have annihilated Norton, whilst

maintaining all Pegasus settings. As a result, I imagine that there must

be something wrong with my Pegasus setup to cause this issue.

Regarding

AVG, I installed the free 2012 version and didn't do any additional

setup. I did noticed, whilst trying to understand it better now, that

according to AVG, exactly 0 emails have been scanned since installation,

so I gather that I need to change that setup :-). I do not have the

virscan extension installed. Apart from the virus checker and the

standard Windows Firewall I have nothing sitting between me and the mail servers.

I will need to double-check the log regarding delays - will get

back to you on that. However, could you help with the Content Control

settings? I was trying to find a forum posting to figure out how/what to

change to 5000, but haven't been lucky... what do I need to do? Given that I have only ever actively used Spamhalter, I am not in any way au fait with Content Control.

Yup - got that far!

However, the only value I saw that I could change was "weight at or above which this definition activates = 50". It seemed unlikely that this value needed to be increased by a factor of 100, as I thought it would effectively deactivate any of the content control rules? Well, in anticipation of info on whether my assumption was wrong,  I've increased that to 5000  now.

The value below the weight defines the amount of a message that will be checked.  Putting 5000 (bytes) in there will limit the checking, but from what you have said you don't use Content Control so the default set is disabled - is that correct?
