Pegasus copy old version files

1.    Use Help | About Pegasus Mail | Info and give us a copy of the results.  Just paste it into the reply.

2.    Verify the folders (PMM/PMI files) are in the home mail directory.

After many years of using Pegasus I now have a problem(!) in that it will not run.  The initial screen appears momentarily then disappears...no error message, nothing.

Have updated to latest version, have tried running the .exe file direct from the Program Files but makes no difference.

Have looked through lots of posts, checked for any rogue .cnm files...nothing.

Aany thoughts anyone?

thanks

If winpm-32.exe is located in program files that is exactly the problem. The file should be located in c:\pmail\programs\ by default or c:\pmail if an older install. 64bit OS systems will not work if you try to install or copy to any program files location on drive.

The v4.63 installer archive default is c:\pmail and should be left that way. You can not install by copy of files from another machine that does not have install already in proper location of c:\pmail otherwise all paths are incorrect.

Thanks for that - Pegasus has run happily under c:\programs\pegasus for over ten years!! Maybe it was a recent Windows update that caused it to get upset!

Anyway, if I do a new install to directory as you suggested, I can resetup POP3 and SMTP information but how can I copy over all my email history?  All email subfolders are held under a master folder called CABINET.

Get a copy of http://www.vandenbogaerde.net/pegasusmail/pf_pmfiles.html
which will explain all files and locations. Then after you do new install or new machine just copy from old the address book file  pair and messages folders pairs and any new mail raw *.cnm files to the appropriate c:\pmail\mail\<user> location on new machine drive. You might also want to save d-list *.pml files too.  In a multi user install there is normally only one pmail.usr file in \mail plus the subdirs (folders) for each username with the \admin being created as the default user.

When you copy/restore old files to new install on new machine they must not be marked R attribute, read only, at OS level. Some backup programs or use of cdrom to transfer the files may mark all as read only files and that must be changed in order to allow Pegasus Mail to have read/write access to the files. Program can not operate with files marked read only.

Have installed new as suggested and it opens ok...I have copied the

PMI/PMM pairs across and the attributes are ok, BUT I don't see my main

CABINET Directory which held all past emails - only a couple of small

odd ones (AXA = FOLO7887 and Paypal = FOLO5B53).

I cannot see what FOLOOEEA is/does. Took some screen prints but can't see how to load here.

 thanks

You will have to look on the old system to see where else .pmm data might have been located or moved to and also for any *.cnm files too. Make sure you copy them in while winpm-32 is closed and then reopen again after moving in the files or file pairs. If they re all present in correct location on drive and location of the new machine you may need to rename hierarch.pm to .bak while closed and the reopen to get all added folders recognized. If any trays they will not be recognized and all will be in flat tree with all at same level.

Where were both home and new mail locations on the old machine and install? In the new install do Help, About, Info button to see current home and new mail locations. Do the same on the old machine to see what home and new mail locations were there. Copy appropriate messages folders from old to correct location on new machine while winpm-32 is closed.

Ok as far as the  program files and below but now to get all the old ..\mail\ and below over to the new install but not any pmail.ini file. If you have access to the old install and location just try using Folders menu and add mailbox to list to point to the old locations where the *.pmm, *.pmi file  pairs were located and see if you can access them that way.

Is it possible this thing you call Cabinet was another location outside of the normal ..pmail\mail\~8 location? What exactly was Cabinet? Was it a directory or subdir or just a folder name or what? Nothing within Pegasus Mail has ever used the name cabinet for anything so it must be a user created name of something? But what? Was it a folder name or a tray or was an additional user named Cabinet created and ..mail\cabinet username?

I use an added user named Archive used for archiving some things in my setup and also to archive full copies with attachments of outgoing email messages.

If you have old other .pmm files and don't know what they contain you can always just open them in Notepad to view plain text  portion and headers to see what they are and from what dates which should help identify them.

Can't open the old installed version so can't use Folders menu there- although I do have a copy and can see all the files.

CABINET is simply a Filing tray  which contains other filing trays and message folders....just to keep things neat and tidy.  Not another user.

There are no other .pmm files - I have opened the few that are there wih Notepad and they do not contain anything related to what was in CABINET.

I also back up everything offline and have checked there from a date when everything was working fine....and the .pmm folders are the same as have been copied....just that I am not seeing the data...even in Copies to Self, which was outside the Cabinet Filing Tray.

Old trays would be nonexistent now and there is no automatic way to rebuild them either. All added folders would now be in top level now.

It doesn't matter what the old install can't do what you would use to add mailbox to list would be the new machine and install but pointed at whatever or  whatever holds those old files.  It would have been nice to have the old installation hierarch.pm for reference in trying to sort out the new installation folders.

Hello - I still have the old folders backed up so can send the OLD hierach.pm file (I have done this to your private email).  Still not sure what I need to do re adding Mailbox(!)...when you say pointed  at....can I point it at my backed up copy?  What files/directory?

One thing  I am also puzzled about is that there are only three pairs of PMI/PMM files whereas I had lots of Folders/message trays. Also in the OLD system I used to have to sign on as Admin if that gives any help.

It would be quite devastating to have lost all the old folders as there was a lot of important emails in there.

thanks
