How are you supposed to set up an account?

From what I know of this message it does not have anything to do with the identity and everything to do with multiple devices accessing the same hosted mailbox.  I would not be surprised if you have an iDevice that is keeping maintaining a connection to the hosted mailbox which is preventing Pegasus Mail from being able to connect.  Disable all other devices that are connecting to this hosted mailbox then try Pegasus Mail again.  You will probably need to disable the automatic polling within Pegasus Mail and trigger downloads manually when you know other devices are not connected.

FWIW, "Identities" in Pegasus Mail do not hold mail data.  They are simply sets of configuration settings that allow you to easily switch from one to another or to use the settings of one while in another (eg: sending mail as a different identity).  Creating a new identity that is the same as a previous one would not be of any benefit.

I installed Pegasus mail in XP . Turned off Firewall and AV. I get the message that another user has the mailbox and simply can't get past that message to even open Pegasus. Disabled Thunderbird, still no can open. There is no other user on this computer.

What is a LOC file?

Quick tutorial...

Pegasus creates a lock file (.lck extension)  in the connected users home mailbox folder.  If Pegasus fails to close cleanly this lock file can be left in place so the next time that user tries to access the mailbox they get a warning about the mailbox being locked.  If you are certain no one else is accessing the mailbox you should be able to continue past the warning message which will release the lock.  To avoid data corruption it is important that a mailbox is never accessed by multiple instances of Pegasus simultaneously.

If you can't get past the mailbox locked warning then check to make sure you have full permissions to the root mailbox folder (should be \Mail) and all subfolders to insure Pegasus is able to create, modify and delete files as it needs to.  Also, make sure Pegasus Mail and the mailbox folder(s) do not reside anywhere inside of the \Program Files folder.

I can't even open Pegasus. I just get that lock warning. I have had no copy of Pegasus on the computer before. I do not use any services from MS. I use Thunderbird. I even got Tbird not to run, and still got the other user warning.

I can't delete the lck file - Pegasus puts it back in.

I did try to install the older version - that worked, but couldn't upgrade. Has been deleted.

I can't delete that html file that others have complained about either, but what on earth else does windows think is using it?

I have full permissions on computer.  Pegasus is not in Program files. Pegasus never opened, so how can it close cleanly? No one else is on the computer.

All my email accounts are webmail.

You said Pegasus never opened but I believe it would have had to open at

least once in order to create the basic configuration files in the

default ADMIN mailbox folder where you would have found the lock file if you

haven't created any other users in Pegasus.

It is possible that Pegasus is running minimized to the Notification area of the System Tray so look for the Pegasus icon there.  You made need to display hidden icons to see it.

You can check to see if Windows shows Pegasus running by opening Task Manager and looking for a Process named "winpm-32.exe".  If there are a lot of processes running you can sort the list by

Image Name(click on the Image Name tab) to make it easier.

It's not minimized in the systray, nor is it in the task manager. I had to hunt for the winpm-32.exe.

I deleted everything, even from the registry, tried installing again, same error.

now windows is complaining it can't find something like the winpm - but it's a dll. not exe.

Where exactly did you find the winpm-32.exe file location? Was it in c:\pmail\programs or c:\pmail location?

Was it v4.63 distribution exe archive that you installed? Did you accept default or did you make sure it was pointed at c:\pmail on your machine drive?

Have or did you view the setup32.hlp file and see:

An overview of the installation and setup process

Installing Pegasus Mail on your computer or Network is typically a two-step process.

In the first step, which you are taking now, the Pegasus Mail program files are installed into a directory on your computer, and icons are added to the Windows 'Start' menu so you can run the program. During this process, changes are made to the Windows Registry (a kind of "system database" Windows uses to keep track of settings and programs) that allow your web browser to use Pegasus Mail, and a small utility is installed that allows you to use the Windows Explorer "Send to..." command to send files via Pegasus Mail.

The second stage of the installation process varies slightly depending on whether you are connecting to a Novell NetWare Local Area Network, or else are installing the program on a single computer, or on a Windows "Peer-to-Peer" or Windows NT network.

I did a search for everything associated with Pmail.

Maybe it's the browser utility. Pegasus installs OK, but the minute I try to run it, I get the user mailbox nonsense.I use Thunderbird and I am not deleting Thunderbird until I get another mail utility running. Tbird is set up to only run when asked. I can prevent TBird from running, but it doesn't help.

The older version of Pegasus installs and runs without the error. If the old version doesn't contain the browser utility, then the browser utility might just be the problem. I installed the old version to see if I could upgrade from it.

discussion on this topic is quite interesting and most importantly I can add insight about pegasus mail and mercury, because I am new to this, so I am still learning from this forum with discussions on different topics. Sorry if is not too disjointed, Greetings all :)

  • Brian,

All of a sudden, one of my email accounts/identities has decided to not let me in. It says it is locked  "account is locked by another session or for maintenance, try again." I don't get any other choices. Happens on 2 computers. All my other emails/identities work fine. I can also get into the account on my phone or from web site for service provider. How do I fix or remove that identity and start over (w/o losing any data).

Thanks,

Wduskin
