What Program is Associated with .dat files?

Martin,

Thank you so very much for your quick and helpful response. You solved my problem. I had tried to associate with WordPad and the association wasn't allowed. But it has allowed me to associate with Notepad with ease.

Thanks you, I'm almost a happy camper now.

I'm running Windows XP  sp 3.  I've noticed many times that there are some files in my system Temp directory which have ".dat" extensions and indicated they are "video files" and Windows has automatically associated them with Nero. But I've tried to open them and Nero just spits them out.

I'm suffering a disaster with fractured Pegasus program files and in sifting through them trying to somehow fix the mess I have I've noticed several ".dat" files, which, of course, are still associated as "video files."  I know they are not "videos," but I have no idea which program to re-associate them with in the windows system.

I hope someone can tell me what program to associate them with so that Pegasus can use them as intended... and now that I think about it, maybe this has something to do with why my three Pegasus programs got scrambled recently and the saved files which I have so carefully set up to save important emails and copies of my own emails have suddenly scattered all over the place.

Please help.  I'm  a long-time Pegasus user and supporter and have files saved way back to 1999 and sure don't want to lose them.

Thanks so much.

On my XP system ".dat" files are associated with Notepad. Generally ".dat" is a generic file type that can be either binary or text. But in the Pegasus Mail executables directory the Dat file is a binary file associated with the main Pegasus Mail program.

I can't think of a reason to associate Dat with Nero the CD/DVD burner, other than using Dat as a generic filetype for temporary/work files.
