Migration from Eudora -- various questions

Also worth noting is that new mail filters only act on unread messages so if you decide
to keep a significant number of messages in the new mail folder (I do) you will benefit
by keeping as many as possible marked as read.

Provided one [x] Allow read mail to stay in the new mail folder
else they are moved to (Main ?) the default mail folder.
[General settings > Basic settings]

I suppose some rules like below at the start of new mail filtering may speed things up:

If expression headers matches "X-Been-Filtered: yes" Exit ""
Always AddHeader "X-Been-Filtered: yes"

I've been using Eudora on Windows roughly forever (since version 2), but since it is no longer supported and is having more and more compatibility issues, I'm looking for an alternative.  Pegasus is the most Eudora-like client out there.  I seriously dislike the Outlook 3-pane style that so many programs copy.  I need bigger text than that, so overlapping windows in "classic" mode are far easier for me to see.  Plus i like to keep different folders open at once.  It's a natural fit, *except* for a few things I can't quite figure out.  So any suggestions would be more than welcome.  I hope I'm not looking stupid or violating any rules by asking them here like this.

So before I ask  about ten questions, does anyone in the forum find this approach objectionable?  Thanks!

Things like the shift from 3 pane preview mode to List mode with one click and the use of the window bar, bottom far right triangle, are fully covered in the Help from toolbar. Also there is manual.pdf too. Setting Editor font and size and Reader font and size are also covered in Help or by going to place to change in Tools, Options and using F1 button also takes you to Help and proper place for answer on the task at hand.

Those are all the things I already figured out.  I have the manual.  It's a bunch of other little differences that have me confused.  Let me start.  Note that I receive mail all day from two different servers -- huge volumes -- and need to download it, not keep it on server forever, but I also depend on "delete after x days" to give me time to get the mail on two separate machines.  Pegasus gets this stuff right..  A few things just confuse me though.

- When POP mail arrives, it is displayed in the Newmail folder in no particular order.  Thus it's hard to find the new messages when there's a lot in the folder.  Is there any way to manage this? (Eudora displays messages in received order until it's sorted, if you have it set to sort-none.  So the new stuff is always at the bottom, regardless of how it's dated.)  IMAP folders seem to display in order until refreshed; new messages go on top even if newest is bottom.

 - Should mail be filtered out of Newmail automatically?  Does stuff normally get put into Main instead?  Does that require a manual move or is there a way to handle that?  Again, my Eudora habit is to have lots of filters to put things into mailboxes, but the unfiltered stuff stays in a big In box unless/until I move it out manually.  I seem to recall reading somewhere that Pmail expects you to keep Newmail pretty small.

- Can you view/edit the "From:" field on outgoing messages, other than via complex Identity selection?  Again, Eudora, whose "personalities" is vaguely like Identities, lets you edit the field (handy for specialized lists) or use a drop-down to select the From line from any personality.
and with that
- Does/can Pmail automatically reply from the matching identity?  Again, when you Reply in Eudora, if the To field was one of your personalities, the reply's From is from that matching personality.  So my mail to my different addresses stays in the right thread.

I have other questions but those are enough for now... Thanks!

Pegasus is extremely flexible and configurable so it is definitely worth spending time in the help files and the manual.  If you are an advanced user you may want to wrap your head around the concepts of Users and Identities.  They add  so much to the Pegasus Mail experience for users who can utilize the additional capabilities they provide.  That said, we're here to help so don't hesitate to ask questions.

BTW,  I use Pegasus similarly to the way you are talking about using it.  I prefer List mode over Preview mode and always keep three windows open; my New Mail folder in one, an Accounting dept folder in another,  and my Folder list in the third.

I know it's very configurable but it's not always entirely obvious, even with the (unfortunately skewed-page PDF) manual.  That's why I'm asking simple questions about things that weren't obvious to me.  So does anyone know how to

a) control or predict the order of arriving POP messages in the Newmail folder, and

b)  clarify when filtering is done.  I notice that whenever I open Newmail, all of the messages are filtered.  This takes a long time unless I've bulkmoved almost everything out of that folder already.  I don't want to filter when a box is opened! I want to be able to filter on demand, sure, but also filter messages as they arrive.  The documentation doesn't seem to show a way to do that; if you want to filter incoming mail, you have to filter the mail you already got over and over and over and over....  This seems to be a serious misfeature.

When new mail messages arrive they are automatically added to the top of the new mail folder display and that is not configurable. Also urgent priority messages go to top also. After download you may resort in preferred order or close and reopen new mail to sort as per your folder setting.

It is assumed that new mail is only temporary until action is taken and that on closure all new mail messages are  moved to default folder for storage unless you have set to allow read mail to remain in new mail folder. Main and all other folders are different and only new mail folder is one file  per message in raw form as received. So in normal operation new mail is self cleaning

You can have general rule sets and run those against any folder including new mail but that is not how it is normally done.

Most user keep few messages in new mail and there is in fact a limit of 750 before serious performance problems begin and refresh is no longer automatic.

Further refinement of new mail on open filtering rules or use of autofiltering would probably work better for you. You may also wish to create more new mail on close filtering rules to perform more actions also.
