Problem with outgoing mail in pegasus going thru optonline.net

i can't send out emails since i switched from verizon to optonline a few days ago. i get the following error message:

[*] Connection established to 167.206.5.250
>> 0095 +OK Messaging Multiplexor (Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 6.2-8.04 (built Feb 28 2007))
<< 0018 USER dkolleeny26
>> 0044 +OK password required for user dkolleeny26
<< 0015 PASS XXXXXXXX
>> 0035 -ERR [AUTH] Authentication failed

My settings for outgoing mail are:

General:

server host name: mail.optonline.net

server tcp/ip port: 587; time out: 360

Security: SMTP Authentication -

Login to the SMTP server using the following details:

user id and password

Please can someone help me solve this frustrating situation?

There is an SSL/TLS security option above SMTP authentication. I am using port 587 for my gmail account and have the Via STARTTLS option enabled. That might work for you.

Thanks very much but adding that option didn't help, i still get the same error!
