C++ Error on Close

There is some malformed spam making the rounds that is crashing Pegasus Mail with a C++ error but it is occurring immediately when these messages are attempted to be added to the new mail folder.  This is quite different from what you are experiencing but I thought it worth sharing.  The Subject of these crasher messages is very long and contains UTF-32 and UTF-16 encoded content.

Here's an example:

Subject:

=?ascii?B?RlJFRSAgVHJhbnNVbmk=?==?utf-32?B?b24sIEVxdWlmYXggICBhbmQgRXhwZXJpYW4gICBTY29yZXMgIERlbGl2ZXJlZCA=?==?utf-16?B?IAAgAEkAbgBzAHQAYQBuAHQAbAB5ACEA?=

The only solution to this particular problem is to locate the offending .cnm file and remove it from the mailbox directory.

Hello Pegasus Mail community!

 We have recently upgraded Pegasus Mail at one of  our sites and have run into this issue with one of our users.

The computer is laptop running Windows XP Pro SP3.

 The version of Pegasus currently running is version 4.63 (Win32), build 325. I can no longer remember what the previous version was.

The user can use Pegasus Mail as normal, however on exit he gets a series of 2 error messages. The first one has a heading of "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library" and states "This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information". The second one has a heading of "winpm-32.exe - Application Error" and reads "The exception unknown software exception (0x40000015) occurred in the application at location 0x02cd66d6. Click on OK to terminate the program"

I have tested it a little and found that the problem doesn't happen if I simply open Pegasus, wait for it to load, and then close it again. But it will reliably occur if I open Pegasus,  wait for it to load, click the icon to bring up a new blank mail message, and then close Pegasus.

To correct this error I have so far tried running Windows updates and installing the latest version of Microsoft C++. I also found a Microsoft hotfix for the problem, but it only applied to XP SP2.

Does anyone have any further troubleshooting suggestions?

Thank you for your time!

Hello again!

Does nobody have any advice regarding where to go from here?

According to your previous post the error only takes place after Ediitor is used or opened and that is TER32.dll. Is there unusual about the user's Editor settings such as maybe unusual font set or size selected? Maybe something that is technically out of bounds for the Editor window as sized? How do the settings compare with another  user or your own? Has user set a font that is not actually a part of system but is a part of maybe office suite or Word files?

Thanks for your response :-)

I've checked the editor settings and they don't seem particularly unusual. The default font is set to Arial size 10 which is the same with my Pegasus installation which doesn't give the error. The rich text box is ticked, which seems to be required for the signature to display. The signature contains an image and some Times New Roman text. I temporarily removed the signature and the error still occurred. The copy self, confirm delivery, and confirm reading boxes are also ticked, which is not the same as my installation.

 I've just been told that the other Pegasus user at that site has begun to have the same problem.
