PMServer vs Mercury Mail

I'm running the current version on the "mail" machine; an older one on my wife's for her mail. Hers is a Windows 7 64 bit box, this laptop is an XP 32 bit. Since her mail's working fine thus far I haven't worked up the ambition for tackling the PM4.6x version on her machine.

Thanks again for the reply.

I am and have been using Pegasus configured as PMServer to route my wife' and my mail to separate mail boxes, etc., etc. Since I'll be moving all my computer stuff to another space and setting up a wireless router for the various computers in our home I thought perhaps setting up Mercury for my mail handling chores might offer some advantages. I installed Mercury on another machine and set about setting it up. Frankly I've not been all that successful in figuring out how to get Pegasus and Mercury to 'talk' to each other. Since we've been quite satisfied with the current arrangement, my question is, given there's just the two of us, is there any advantage to using a mail transport system like Mercury over what we're now using?

Understand that if anyone provides a compelling argument for implementing Mercury, you  will be barraged with additional questions![:)]

Getting Pegasus Mail to work with Mercury is pretty simple though has been complicated a bit with 64 bit OS's.  It requires running PCONFIG.EXE and configuring the gateway.  If you follow this discussion list you already know that PCONFIGI don't believe it would be worth it with just two users but that depends on your setup.

Getting Pegasus Mail to work with Mercury is pretty simple though has been complicated a bit on 64 bit OS's.  It requires running PCONFIG.EXE and configuring the gateway.  If you follow this forum you already know that PCONFIG is a 16 bit app that won't run on 64 bit machines without the use of a DOS emulator like DOSBOX.

I question whether setting up Mercury would be worth it for just two users.  In a multi-user network environment all users can run a single instance of Pegasus Mail with Mercury feeding the mailboxes.  Advantages are that Mercury can be utilized for filtering and spam control before the messages are placed in the users mailbox and a single install of Pegasus Mail means only one installation to maintain.  If this is appealing than Mercury might be the right answer but if not, I don't think it would be worth it.  If you wish to pursue it consider posting on the Mercury forum for assistance.

Thanks, Brian. Those were pretty much my thoughts as well. I think I'll stick with what's been working since, as they say, it ain't broke.

You don't say with version of Pegasus Mail you are running as your PMServer but I get the sense that it is an older version that has been working fine so hasn't been upgraded.  If it is a version prior to the introduction of 'identities' you will benefit from the most recent version and the utilization of identities.
