Transferring Everything to New Install

The job is done!! It took me a while to decide what to transfer, aside from what was indicated above. The end result, however, looks good. Things seem to be working well, but time will be the real test.

I am, at long last, committed to a new install of Pegasus 4.63. I've had a rather significant crash which is forcing me to upgrade a number of things. I have a dual-boot system, Win 2000 and XP. Win 2000 was my primary OS. I will be switching to XP as primary, on a different drive. I will be upgrading Pegasus from v4.41 to v 4.63. I have a great deal of mail to transfer, mail which cannot be lost. I have the mail itself backed up on a thumbdrive. I have Pegasus v4.63 installed on the XP drive, able to send and receive mail. Next I think I need to transfer things over. I'm posting now to verify the procedure.

Pegasus Mail and click the Info button. These three lines will tell you

where Pegasus Mail is installed and where the mailboxes are.

If Pegasus Mail is not currently installed in C:\PMAIL then do a new install

on the new machine, configure it including creating users (same as in your old

install), then copy message files, folder files, address book files, etc. from the mailbox folders on

with all .cnm files (new mail messages), all .pmm and .pmi files (folders and

associated indexes) and all .pmr and .pm! files (addressbooks and

indexes). There is a guide to Pegasus Mail filenames and extensions that

There should not be a need to overwrite any files

during the copy process as the files in...

I think I'm making progress on understanding this. I have all the pertinent (I hope all) files copied onto a thumb drive, 950+ files. I have them copied as a folder 'ADMIN', which will replace the PMAIL\MAIL\ADMIN folder in the new install. I will not copy over pmail.ini, pmail.usr, or pmailini,old. Everything else, I think, can go into the new install, into the MAIL folder.

I have a concern though. The ADMIN folder I will be putting in place is 'read only' though the individual files are not. Will that work in the new install of Pegasus?

You would be better advised to transfer only the files you need.

Thank you, sir, for the quick reply. Let's see whether I've interpreted you correctly.

Some files would be repeated, copied over, in the procedure I gave. What I believe you're telling me is that if a file exists in the new install of Pegasus v4.63, then I should not transfer it from v4.41. Is that correct? That would eliminate files such as Basic.pnc , Black.pml, Hierarch.pm, and so forth.

The other end of the spectrum would be to transfer only: cnm, pmm, pmi, pmr, and pm!. Would that work better? Would that give me a fully functional Pegasus, without having to reconfigure?

Transfer only the needed files. As you say cnm, pmm pmi etc.

You can also include such items as server definitions, recently used addresses etc.
